We had the good fortune of connecting with Dave Shanaé and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dave, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
There was a point in time for me where all I could do is focus on work, and making sure I got as many projects done possible. I noticed it was becoming more stressful than it was productive so then I was learning how to relax and enjoy life outside of creating. But just as I tend to over work myself, I started to over relax myself. I didn’t know to how have a balance of work/play. Learning how to give time across everything I enjoy to do is still a constant practice for me. I don’t think I’ll ever truly get it down 100% because even though I love consistency, I hate it too. All that to say, the one thing I feel like will always stick; is understanding that to enjoy the work I do and to give it my undivided attention during the time it needs, I need to experience/enjoy myself In other areas too. The balance of work/play is so important for a productive mind.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
If I was to describe my music, it’s a combination of my life experiences and the sounds that play in my head on repeat. I call it Atmospheric Tribal Funk, but that’s because I was trying to be as weird as possible and because I don’t really like putting myself in a box anyway; but it still sounds cool. I got to where I am by watching my Dad build a life out of his career as a poet and learning that having a career in art is possible. I’m also not afraid to ask questions and learn. Some people are afraid to look “dumb” and honestly I can careless. If I don’t know something, I won’t pretend I do, I feel it’s more embarrassing to get caught in a lie than to just ask what you don’t know.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Gas Works Park at night because you get a fire view of the city then, take them to this fire BBQ place that I actually forgot the name to lol, but know exactly how to get there which is just as important. Then introduce them to some of the people I work with!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to send love to my Pops for being the foundation of who I shaped myself to be.
