We had the good fortune of connecting with David Gomez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I noticed I just couldn’t hold down a job. I didn’t like people telling me what to do as for some reason I felt stressed. I also saw the way places were managed and I hated it so I would leave. I just had my 2nd child and I knew I needed to find something I loved. So I thought to myself why not open my own business work for myself and push myself hard to succeed because I knew 2 little boys were depending on me.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I opened The Wrestling Guy Store in February of 2013 in Huntington Park. As a kid I was a huge Wrestling fan and when I was thinking of a store concept I said why can’t a WWE themed store work. I had gone to a store in Lakewood, CA and seen RVD 5 Star Wrestling and Comics. When I walked in I started getting ideas in my head and knew I needed to open a Wrestling store. Now being a store that just sells WWE tees and action figures is not easy as you only sell to a niche audience. Fortunately that niche audience has helped us to grow from just selling tees and action figures to selling WWE mugs, Replica Titles, Socks and so much more. Thanks to Green Inc Promotions and Tony Vela I’ve also been able to bring some great wrestling names to the city for fans to meet and leave fans with great memories.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would first start by showing my best friend my store (The Wrestling Guy Store) because I am so proud of what I’ve accomplished. I would then have lunch at Casa Luz in Huntington Park. Probably go check out The Funko Store in Hollywood and then check out the Universal City Walk
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to give a shoutout to my family because without them I wouldn’t be here. Without their support and encouragement I would not have my business.
Also to Rob Van Dam whose store was my inspiration and also gave me his blessing.
And to Alfred Bravo and JoAnn Bergeman unfortunately They’re no longer here but without them. I know I would have given up.
