We had the good fortune of connecting with DeJené Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DeJené, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Most of my success has been because I took a risk or decided to wing it. I got my first brand deal because I woke up one day and decided I wanted to take some photos for my Instagram, 2 days later forever 21 reached out to me to work with them. I strongly believe that if you don’t take risks in your life you’ll never reach your full potential. A lot of people will ask you “what if it doesn’t work out?” To which I respond “what if it does?” I feel like if you only look at the “what if”from a negative or fearful perspective you’ll never know the endless boundaries or goals you can reach. Don’t let the fear of failure stop you from taking a risk that could make you successful at your dream, whatever that may be.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I consider myself more of a Creative than an artist, my goal is always to uplift and remind women and girls that they are beautiful and worthy at every size and stage in their life. I create videos and put together trendy outfits for plus size bodies. I’m very versatile and I love to express myself through different hairstyles and aesthetics. I’m like a chameleon you never know what look I’m going to showcase next because it’s important for women to know that we are always evolving and I like my looks should showcase that.
I’m most excited knowing that I’ve inspired people to take risks with their fashion or hair choices and I’ve helped people learn to love themselves. & I’m actually looking to start my own personal shopper/stylist business in the near future because I love making people feel good and as a plus size person it’s just fun to be able to style all shapes and sizes and push myself and others out of their comfort zones.
I’ve always known I was meant to work in a creative field but never in a million years did I think I’d be working with some of the biggest fashion companies as a plus size creator. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t take risks btw! It has not been easy, I think my biggest challenge is staying consistent enough to build a steady following. Even When I am super consistent I still have to fight the issue of the algorithms and being a black plus size creator the industry is so saturated sometimes I feel like my hard work isn’t paying off so just trying not to get defeated has also been a challenge. But taking breaks and recouping always helps & I have to remind myself that I’m doing this because I love to create and inspire others to chase their dreams.
I think the biggest lesson has been that staying consistent is the most important if you want to see a successful outcome however make sure that you are doing it because you LOVE it, don’t let your driving force be success because it will tear you down and break you if you aren’t gaining it quickly. Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s and don’t sell yourself short. You have to believe in yourself first.
I absolutely love fashion and helping women feel confident in their bodies. I grew up hating my body I used to wear sweatshirts in the summer and never wanted to take pictures because I was so insecure. Now I model lingerie swimsuits and everyday looks for brands like SavageXFenty, Forever 21 Shein & FashiontoFigure. Being able to create a body positive safe space for girls and women like me is truly more than I could’ve ever dreamed of. The girls today are truly so lucky to see real bodies being represented & showcased as beautiful. I’m so so grateful & blessed that I can be apart of this community.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love my city. Born and Raised in Los Angeles. What I love most about la is that there are so many different cities each one unique to itself. From beaches to nightlife to art districts we’ve got a little bit of something for everyone. My favorite pastime before the pandemic would be to do disneyland with my boyfriend, So I would absolutely be taking whoever I’m with there. Maybe one of the many rooftop bars in the city or even a nice trendy restaurant like Catch or Mamas Shelter. Definitely Melrose Ave for some unique shopping. Check out a few different museums or art exhibits. Tbh I’m excited to get back out into the world and see what has changed in the last year and kind of be a tourist in my own city.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Boyfriend/Business Partner Jonathan, I literally could not do this and I would not be where I am without his support, his help and his belief in my success as a creator. My Family & My Friends for believing in & pushing me to chase my dreams. All of my creator colleagues/friends who have helped shape me into a better creator and for holding me accountable. I love you guys and I hope you know how much you’ve all impacted my journey for the better!
