We had the good fortune of connecting with Dilcia Giron and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dilcia, how do you think about risk?
I think about risk as a great opportunity to grow, learn and feel alive. I am a survivor of war and poverty, during my childhood my life was at risk everyday. Although there was some emotional trauma and PTSD, I also developed a certain toughness to life. I moved to the USA without a family and without speaking the language. But I didn’t let that stop me from moving up in both my artistic career and professional career as an insurance agent. I don’t give up no matter the difficulties.Even if is taking me longer than other people who have the advantages I never had.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Please tell us more about your art. I am a multi media artist, who likes to explore any kind of art expression. I don’t like to define who I am as an artist, I like to break any definitions and create something new and different all the time.

We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about.
I am a full time Insurance Agent. The steady income allows me to be as free as I want with my art.

How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy?
Fighting, screaming, yelling. Being a brown female immigrant with an accent and no education, makes you invisible. People are always doubting your capacity and intentions. To get where I a now in my art career, I had to literally make a lot of noise. Social media became a great tool for me. I created many accounts for all the art I do, and that eventually got me the attention and recognition as an artist.

If not, how did you overcome the challenges? To be a successful artist, you have to be social, do a lot of PR and make connections with galleries and curators. I have very little time for that. Still, I don’t let that stop me from doing what I want to do.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. I learned that there is nothing more rewarding than learning something new. Regardless of how difficult or impossible it looks, if you are persistent you will learn it.

What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story? People around me were constantly trying to label me or define who I was. I fought all the labels and definitions and follow my self, heart and passion. You may lose some acquaintances along the way, but the true friends will remain.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? I would take them for an early hike in Lands End. We would walk all the way to the Legion of Honor museum and have brunch at their cafeteria. I would also pay a visit to the De Young Museum and the Japanese Garden in Golden Gate Park. We will definitely go to the Castro and the Mission District, lots of life and colors, and great place for food.

In your view what are some of the most fun, interesting, exciting people, places or things to check out?
I like going for hikes in Northen California, beautiful redwoods and ocean views. I love people who like to explore as much I do.
