We had the good fortune of connecting with Doe Paoro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Doe, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
“Stay the course.” This advice is really a delusion of the ego which has many plans for us, but which may not always be in our best interest! I would say this advice has pressured people into feeling trapped or limited to certain trajectories, just because an outdated version of themselves thought it would be a good idea. In my career as a songwriter and artist, when I have “stayed the course” and ignored my intuition to do otherwise, I have suffered for it. I believe better advice would be to say “Stay Dynamic.” We humans live in such a dynamic existence; we are all growing in consciousness and changing every day, and so are the people and environment around us. Allowing for the ability to change our minds and switch directions – and normalize doing so – would create a lot more authenticity, spaciousness, freedom, flow, and personal evolution, in my opinion. There is never just one way to get where we want to go; only thinking makes it so.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a singer and songwriter and soundhealer. Foundational to my music is an intention that it be a healing presence for others, and that it be of service in some way. Like many, I have had a unique path with many challenges and I think the hardest one was finding a way to integrate my spiritual and healing practice with my music career, which felt separate for many years. I could not find the way to make them intersect because the culture in the music industry felt at odds with my goals in my spiritual practice: normalization of drug and alcohol abuse, transactional, performative, and often narcissistic. I felt like I was living a double life for many years – going to India and Peru to study and then coming back and playing nightclubs and being told that I needed to post more on Instagram in order to get through to my fans. It became deeply unsustainable until I began getting very honest with myself and letting go of needing my music career to look a certain way. The more I showed the parts of myself that I was scared to — stepping into sound healing and teaching on the voice from a somewhat shamanic point of view — the more things started to flow for me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a friend was visiting in Los Angeles, my two favorite spots right now are Huntington Gardens and Wolf Connection, a wold sanctuary in Acton, CA. I unapologetically love Erewhon and would probably go there to pick up some things and then cook together at my house and go for a hike in Topanga. I also love showing people the Observatory, a classic.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would dedicate my shoutout to my family, who has shown me unconditional love and acceptance, and which I wish for every person on the planet. I would also thank my best friend, Miranda Siegel, whose friendship has been a nourishing constant in my life. I would also shoutout Julia Cameron, because “The Artist’s Way” was an important book on my path.
