We had the good fortune of connecting with DR Z PHD and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DR Z PHD, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe the success of my brand is my ability to retain myself. To maintain my individuality in the midst of other voices. Some call it authenticity. But what exactly is that? Especially when we have marketing and business coaches ready to sell a packaged concept of you to you on “how to be your authentic self.”? If you don’t know who you are and think a business guru does, you are in for a trouble. Thus authenticity, has been diluted and stripped of its meaning.

To me, authenticity in business is being able to define and showcase your brand through the lens of who I am. Not an easy task. For most of us are terrified to be truly seen. So how does one become authentic?

Some suggest starting with defining your ideal customer and creating a brand around it. I suggest a backwards approach. Define who you are first to become the ideal provider for diverse consumers.

And in the field of psychotherapeutic services, it can be a challenge. Most graduates tend to lean to one or another modality of psychotherapy. Going on to “become” Freudian, Jungian, Rogerian, etc.,.

The challenge is, can you become Yourselfian?

Thus the success of my brand is that I practice DrZian therapy. Offering services from the core of who I am. I retain my directness, clear analytic thinking, ability to quickly see through your issue(s) and fearlessly point them out, all the while stylishly presenting in my personal style that often mimics Edna Mode.

What should our readers know about your business?
My private practice, DR Z PHD, is focused on providing psychotherapy services to transgender and non binary adults. What’s special about my practice is its exclusive focus on transgender care. This enables me to be specialized in working with gender diverse people. Which is rare today given that most psychologists tend to focus on treating multiple issues and diagnostic clusters, whereas I strictly focus solely on gender issues. The result, is a clinician who knows and understand gender issues to the core.

My personal mission as a transgender therapist at DR Z PHD is first and foremost to respect a person autonomy and their right to make decision about their medical care and ultimately their life.
I am most proud of the work I do for the trans community. One of the biggest barriers transgender people face is access to the medical care they so badly need. Written evaluation letters from a therapist certifying the presence of Gender Dysphoria remains to be the biggest obstacle toward receiving medical help. For this reason, I provide evaluations and letter write-ups completely for free, at no cost to the transgender community (sorry CA and FL residents only, licensure rules). And maybe somehow this is my own small way of fighting injustice.
I am also a strong believer that education and knowledge holds power. The kind of power able to aid transgender people in making better decisions toward their rightful body autonomy. Access to the right information saves them precious time when it comes to making decisions about transition. Most importantly, it helps them become the person they always wanted to be! For this reason, I provide people with expert, up-to-date, research-based information by writing blogs and creating video content on my DR Z PHD YouTube channel accessible to all. This content covers subjects on Gender Dysphoria, transition, and the medical procedures necessary to achieve the congruency people are striving for.

Getting to where I am today with my private practice has been a fascinating personal endeavor. I say fascinating because it taught me everything I know about myself today and continues to be my biggest teacher. Was it easy? No. But it wasn’t difficult either. If you are able to embrace the challenges, the unknown along with known, and your fears all the while retaining who you are, then the path to success becomes a personal staple of inner growth and perseverance.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Easy. I am a home body so we will be most likely staying at home. All the while enjoying fresh pasta, charcuterie, and wines from Eataly located in Century City. Occasionally we may go on a trip to John Kelly’s Chocolates on Sunset Blvd to pick up a box of fine fudge. And we might actually leave home to visit Getty Museum for its beautiful architecture and grounded gardens.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout is to transgender, non binary, and all gender non confirming adults who have crossed my path and will cross my path in the future. As much as I have been instrumental in their lives, they have been tremendously so in mine. Each individual story, struggle, and success is a thread in the fabric of my life. I am grateful to have an opportunity to do what I love most while working with the most interesting people of this time.
