We had the good fortune of connecting with Drea and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Drea, how do you define success?
I define success through failure. On my Podcast, The Journey of Pursuit, I always ask 2 questions: (1) what is your biggest failure? (2) what is your biggest success? All of my guests have answered with something along the lines of “well I wouldn’t call it a failure but…”

I think as creatives we are prepared to fail. We are prepared to be judged and criticized for our work. This doesn’t mean we are not affected by it, but we know that it’s there. We get to choose whether it breaks us or makes us. There really is no such thing as failure, if you really think about it. In order to know what the next step is, what actually works vs what doesn’t work, you need to fail. That is the only way to get to the other side. Think about your role-model or your icon – I bet they had many failures before successes, and if they don’t share those, then, know that they exist. Failing is a stepping stone to success. Personally, I think it comes from trial and error. It comes from starting over and over again. Getting back up after many times of falling. It’s forgiving yourself and not being too hard on yourself. It’s loving the process and trusting that you are on the way to where you want to be regardless of the hardships. It’s crying, laughing, re-trying, getting frustrated, smiling, feeling proud, feeling angry, etc. So really, ultimately, success is what you want it to be. In my eyes — everyday you’re able to live, move your body, say I love you, and create — it’s a successful day.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
From solely being known as a singer/songwriter to now hosting a Podcast every week and writing all kinds of content, I think it’s safe to say that my art has changed throughout the years. Like everything in life, you grow and you change – so has my art. I started singing and writing from a very early age. I went to music school to study music business and from there really made it my entrepreneurial debut. During my studies, I interned with Emilio Estefan for 2 years where I wrote a catalog of songs. One of them just got released as Gloria Estefan’s newest single, “Cuando Hay Amor”. The lessons I’ve learned along the way are that you have to create from the heart. Any other way, I believe, wont last very long. I have learned that true connection and authenticity is the best form of artistry. I also learned to not let a title define me. Everyone knew me as a Songwriter. When the pandemic hit and I had the idea for my Podcast, I was a bit scared. “What will people think?” “Can I do this?” etc. I realized in that moment how no one can tell you who you are, but yourself. If you want to change directions, do it. If you have an idea to start a business, do it! Now is the time!  I have realized how much we all have to offer the world with our art, and how mindset is everything whilst on the journey to pursuing your dream.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Breakfast: Obet & Dells or Trails Cafe
Lunch: Tacos Tu Madre
Dessert: Pressed Juicery or Bigg Chill for the best vegan cookie dough
Dinner: Sushi Stop or Sage
For evening walks: Griffith Observatory or The Grove/The Americana

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my parents and family who have always supported my creative endeavors. They have been a great example of what it means/takes to be an entrepreneur. Through their confidence in me, I have been able to be confident in myself. To my mentor, Emilio Estefan who has been a true teacher to me and I am forever grateful to him and the whole Crescent Moon Family for their guidance and knowledge of the industry. To my friends who are always by my side, cheering me on and helping me in any way they can – I am very grateful for you all!
