We had the good fortune of connecting with Dyyo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dyyo, why did you pursue a creative career?
When I see this question I’m reminded of a quote from the film “New York Stories” This quote is the response an art teacher gives to a student asking whether her art is good enough to pursue a career. The teacher says.

“What the hell difference does it make what I think. It’s yours. I mean, you make art because you have to, ’cause you got no choice. It’s not about talent, it’s about no choice but to do it.”

This quote hit me hard and has stuck with me ever since i heard it. Art is a calling. People are compelled to make art. I personally don’t think i consciously choose art as a career. Art and making music and videos has just engulfed my life so much that naturally it became my career because i was doing it so much. I’m very fortunate to have had great opportunities for my art to be on a platforms that have led to success more and more. I only plan on continuing to reach higher heights and developing great relationships and experiences for myself and for my audience.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a musical performing artist. That mean my music is deeper than some songs i wrote and put together for an album. Each song, each album is part of a world im creating. It all ties in together, espescially when you see the performances as well. I am a very high energy performer, which is always exciting to see, but the main aspect of my performances is the intent. Every performance is a journey. Theres always some sort of abstrct emotional story arc. A rise a climax and a resolution. I got where I am today by sticking with my intuition and taking my time to make sure that everything that i produce is quality. This is not an easy process especialty today where things are so quickly consumed. Im still able to keep a loyal audience because i love to engage with my fans and really enrich the connection that i have with them. The most important thing ive learned is to stick to your gut and trust that you know what is best for yourself! If there is anything that I want the world to know about me its that I dont make surface level art. I produce experiences that are enjoyable and cerebral.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If they were visiting on the weekend i would definitely take them to see some live music at the crown. The next morning we would got to the best brunch spot in Baltimore, Water For Chocolate. We would get a late lunch from Black Sause Kitchen. During the week we would hang at the outdoor court yard bar at Faddensonen and get some Tacos and Margaritas from Clavel, but they would probably be too busy so we would go to Cocina Luchadoras. If haven’t noticed i really like to eat.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shouts out to the city of Baltimore! since moving here in 2014 ive grown so much as an artist and a person. This city has given me a lot and I will return the favor!
