We had the good fortune of connecting with Tahnaiya Russell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tahnaiya, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
Leaving UK for America.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have an art series called Black Brit in Wonderland. It’s based on my childhood and reflects some of my Caribbean heritage. It’s a place where I’m surrounded by all the wonderful British sweets, cakes, and Caribbean drinks I had growing up in Britain. I’ve used black barbie dolls and I’ve created these scenes by photo manipulation with sweets, cakes, and drinks planted into the environment, and some of these cakes I’ve used as hair accessories for the barbie dolls. I wanted to create this wonderland where diabetes, racism and all the other isms don’t exist. That’s just one of my art series. I’m also a musician, I like to experiment and explore multiple genres, which you can listen to on any streaming platform. I enjoy remixing and mashups as well. I’ve recently been making a lot of Youtube videos. I have two channels, one where I talk about various topics and the other channel where I explore around LA, London and Jamaica.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Huntington Gardens is where I want to take all my friends and family when they’re in town. Little Kingston for good Jamaican food, Cha Cha Chili for Korean bbq tacos, Tarzana Armenian Deli for a great lentil wrap, Joes Falafel for a gyro wrap and Follow Your Heart in Canoga Park for everything else. Topanga and Agoura Hills for relaxation and good hikes. I’ve seen some beautiful horses and rattlesnakes round there.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
