We had the good fortune of connecting with Eboney merriman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eboney, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I took a risk by moving to LA in the first place, wanting to be more active in creating and putting my art out there for the world to see. Although I am originally 6 hrs away from the Bay area, LA is still alot different from home and taking a leap of faith is always scary. You never know if you’re going to make it or not. But my faith is bigger than fear. So I’d say I’m enjoying this beautiful journey of mine.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I took art classes in high-school and college, but was still discovering myself as an artist at that time. But it wasn’t till I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer that I couldn’t work and turned to painting to keep me sane. Art was my diary and the paint were my words. After defeated cancer I told myself I would move to LA and finally start LIVING rather then SURVIVING. I then enrolled in TV/ Gilm makeup school to help expand my creative talents and broaden the playing field for myself, challenging and discovering my creativity and what opportunities it could bring me by putting myself out there. I’ve learned that nothing is impossible and that if I beat cancer, then I can beat any other doubts that i put on myself and that may be holding me back.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I currently moved to what is considered downtown Culver city, which has a street full of different restaurants, and I’ve taken it upon myself to try every single one lol. Rush bar is my favorite so far.
I also enjoy the Hike and Wine trail in malibu, where you get to see all the beautiful animals on an hr walk and then enjoy wine tasting for an hr.
The parlor on Melrose is also a nice place to grab a drink and be classy while meeting cool people. And let’s not forget about Venice beach. It may be a bit overrated, but I never get tired of the water or “people watching”.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Voyage magazine is the first platform to tell my story and interview me. So big shout out to you guys for giving me a voice. I also wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the greatest creator themself (GOD). Also, all art showcase platforms that have allowed me to show off and express myself (TrapArt. Chocolate and art, Raw art and Battle Art LA).
