We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Rice and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ebony, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always been obsessed with cosmetics but since I was always around people in the radio/television industry, that became my priority career and cosmetics took the back burner. I could never find the perfect lashes so I started shopping from vendors just for my personal self because in my mind I was thinking, “why am I paying full price for lashes that I’m not completely satisfied with when I can buy for cheaper price and really find some I can stick with.” Finally, I found a vendor that I loved and I started wearing them just for myself. When I would be out and about I would always get complimented on my lashes so after a while a lightbulb went off in my head to start my own lash business. So I started having my close friends try out my samples so I can get feedback about the lashes. Everything went good so I launched a Winx Collection by E during the pandemic and within time I added lip glosses and lip liners and made it a cosmetics line. What should our readers know about your business?
Winx Collection by E is a cosmetics brand that sells Vegan and cruelty-free products. Which includes smooth and long lasting lip liners, non sticky lip glosses and 3D Siberian mink lashes that you can wear up to 20-25 times. What I’m most excited about is the growth in my business, it’s really just the beginning! How I got to where I am today business wise is just having discipline and being focused. I was so determined to start this business and give people quality products. Sometimes it takes me a while to launch a new product because I really want to release products that I could be proud of and stand on than just doing it for the money. I want my business to have longevity and be respected and known for its quality. My journey was definitely not easy, it was so much trial and error and at times I was discouraged. Honestly, I still get discouraged at times but, I just always try to keep faith because giving up isn’t an option so I have no choice but to make it work. So I just overcome the challenges by always researching my niche, seeing what’s new and popular, etc. The lessons I’ve learned along the way is to focus on yourself. My journey isn’t the next person’s journey and often times we’re watching another business and seeing them blow up out of nowhere and you’re still in the same place and it can get discouraging and distract me from handling business such as content and etc so i’ve learned to focus on myself and focus on my business and what’s meant for me will come to me when it is time as long as I stay focused and hungry. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Throughout my whole start up and entrepreneurship journey, I’ve had a great support system. Starting out my mom, being a Lawyer, helped me out so much with the paperwork side of the business. Also, my best friend, who helped me come up with my business name. I also went and sat down with Maxie J, who is a successful designer in LA and she gave me so much insight on how to start up and run a successful business. My cousin, who is a photographer, shot all my pictures for my website and content for little to nothing. My sister who would wear my samples and sit and help me figure out styles. It really took a village, I was so appreciative to have them during the start up of Winx Collection by E.
