Meet Ebony Richardson | Empowerment Strategist & Nonprofit Visionary

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Richardson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ebony, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Compton, California—where my roots run deep. My grandfather bought our home with a VA $1 loan, and that house has always been my anchor. We moved around a lot when I was younger, but when I was about 12, my mom decided North Long Beach would be home. Still, no matter where we lived, Compton was always home in my heart. That place, that house, taught me about the power of community, legacy, and resilience.
Growing up in Compton, I saw firsthand what it means to push through, even when the odds are stacked against you. It wasn’t always easy, but I learned that if you stay grounded in your values and work together, you can make real change. That’s why I created the Ebony Project—to take everything I’ve learned and pour it back into the community that made me.
The Ebony Project is my way of giving back, creating spaces where people can grow, thrive, and build something better for themselves. I’ve seen how powerful it is when someone believes in you, when you have access to the right resources, and when a community rallies around its own. I want to be part of that energy, part of the solution. This work isn’t just something I do—it’s who I am, and it’s my way of making sure the spirit of resilience and empowerment continues for generations to come.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an Empowerment Strategist and Nonprofit Visionary, my mission is to guide others in unlocking their potential, empowering communities, and driving real, sustainable change. What sets me apart is that my work is not just about strategy; it’s about living out my purpose and helping others find theirs.
Nothing about my journey has been easy. I come from a culture where securing a government job is seen as the pinnacle of success—where you’re expected to stay because that’s what it means to “make it.” I had one of those jobs, working for the county, and for a while, I sat in it, feeling complacent but comfortable. Yet, I wasn’t wired for that. Deep down, I felt stifled. I knew I wasn’t walking in my purpose, and eventually, I realized it was time for a change.
I decided to create the life I wanted and do the work I was truly called to do. I didn’t just want to be comfortable; I wanted to be impactful. Leaving that stable job wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. I knew I needed to break free and build something that empowered not just myself, but others. That’s what led to the creation of the Ebony Project. I want to empower people from all walks of life to step into underserved communities and create the change that’s so desperately needed.
What I’ve learned along the way is that walking in your purpose isn’t always smooth or straightforward, but it’s worth every challenge. The most important thing I’ve done is stay true to that purpose. And that’s what I want people to know about me and my brand—I’m here to create pathways for others to rise up, create change, and leave a lasting legacy in their communities. It’s not just about doing the work myself; it’s about empowering others to join me in this mission.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly, if my best friend came to visit, we’d probably hop another flight. lol! We live to travel…. Explore new places … but we’d kick things off by grabbing some incredible tacos from one of the best food trucks around. From there, we’d dive into the city’s culture by visiting a pop-up museum—getting lost in the art and creativity before catching some live music at a cozy lounge or an intimate venue. We’d definitely spend a day thrifting in some unconventional spots, hunting for unique vintage finds, and then hit up a live music lounge for drinks and good vibes. Brunch is a must, followed by a relaxing beach day with a walk along the shore. Evenings would be reserved for more live music, whether it’s at a rooftop bar, outdoor concert, or laid-back café. Of course, we’d indulge in some soul food to keep the energy right, and maybe even treat ourselves to a little spa day for some self-care. We’d wrap things up with a reflective morning, grabbing coffee at a cozy café and taking a peaceful nature walk to recharge before parting ways.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My faith has always been a guiding force in my life. It keeps me grounded and reminds me that everything I do has a greater purpose. It’s been a source of strength, clarity, and direction on this journey.
I also want to shout out my family—my husband and my children. They are the real MVPs in my life. Every idea, event, or fundraiser I come up with, they’re right there, ready to help. They support me with so much love, patience, and encouragement, even when they can’t always see the vision themselves. Whether it’s putting in free labor, helping bring my dreams to life, or just being present, their faith in me means the world. I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without them by my side.
Lastly, a special mention to The Path Made Clear by Oprah Winfrey. That book has been such a source of inspiration for me. It helped me find alignment between my purpose and my faith, reminding me to keep pushing forward, even when the path isn’t always clear.
