We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Buckingham and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Like everything in my life, I lead with my spirit and instinct. Working in a creative industry can often times be undervalued and under appreciated. There are obvious moments of doubt and wanting to give up but, when I pick up my camera and start shooting I get that feeling that everything is aligned. My body clicks into the zone and I go with the gut.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work is inspired by the beauty of my subjects and their individual melancholic state of being magical, and that magic must be preserved. I find inspiration in everything around me. I am moved by a sunset, a wave, an abandoned barn, a worn in tee, a silk robe, the asymmetry of nature, but mostly by humanity. I find that muses are the most beautiful when they are candid, raw, unfiltered and true, Beauty exists in truth. I always knew I was going to be a photographer, the styling just came with. I think what separates myself from others is my way to make someone feel good while taking their photo and having it come across effortlessly thru the lens. With styling, my attention to detail and colors, I’m a sucker for good vintage mixed in with high designer. There will always be challenges but, it’s important to keep going, maintain your work relationships, treat people with kindness, stand up for what you believe and stay humble.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m Venice born and raised so I would start there get a tea from the Rose Cafe, do some shopping at my favorite local store Animal House. Then take a nice walk down to the pier & back. Hop in my car with the camera of course, grab some sandwiches from Bay Cities, drive up the coast…past Malibu and go for a hike/picnic at La Piedra Beach….end up at my favorite, Nobu for dinner and drinks at Soho Malibu with friends, night walk on the beach after a couple espresso martini’s. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
David Lachapelle, he was my introduction into the industry and truly made an impact on me and the trajectory of my career. He believed in me at a young age and helped me build my confidence as an artist. Working at his studio, gave me the opportunity to find connections and collaborators that I have worked with thru out my career. One of the most prominent connections was celebrity stylist Charlene Roxborough Konsker. Over the past ten years I have worked side by side with her and have been able to hone my craft. She is an excellent example of a female entrepreneur that can do it all.
