We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Margetts and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I had my own Digital Marketing business in the UK, that’s where I was born and raised until I was 32. Starting any business is a brave and risky thing to do in the first place, you don’t know if people are going to want your services, you don’t know how much money you’re going to make and if you can live on this; there are a lot of risk factors to consider. But, if you don’t try, you’ll never know and I’d much rather try and fail than never know.

When I moved to the States it was a risk in life, let alone in my business, but I was desperate to get here to see what opportunities would come knocking at my door. I’d always known I had ‘gifts’ but it wasn’t until I’d moved to Chicago and honed in on them that I realised how strong they were. I did a course with Mark the Midwest Medium and within 8 weeks I was starting my own psychic medium business.

In September 2022 I rented a 6ft x 12ft space in a flea market and that’s where Whispy Gypsy was born. I started out just doing readings and making my own basic crystal beaded bracelets; however, as soon as that began, my creative juice really started to flow. The first risk, I literally started the company with no money, I maxed out my credit card and prayed that I’d make enough money to sustain myself, let alone pay that off. Risk 2, people have mixed emotions about psychics and their ability to ‘talk to dead people’, I didn’t want people’s small minds assuming I was working for dark energies etc. Risk 3, I’m a legal non-immigrant alien in this country, and being British, on a particular visa etc would I be allowed to do this business alongside the one I’d been granted access to the USA for too.

Within the year (to date) I’ve gone from that rectangular building in the flea market, to a 10ft x 10ft space in the same building to now owning my very own store in Madison Heights in Michigan. The risks I’ve taken over the last year has paid off so much and more! I’m now a qualified Holy Fire Reiki Practitioner, and due to my mediumship gifts I have the ability to feel what’s wrong with you in me; if you have a painful right knee, I can feel where the pain is. So, unlike other Reiki Practitioners, I don’t waste time healing areas that don’t need healing, I’ll concentrate solely on the areas that need attention.

When you’re willing to take risks, you learn so much not only about yourself, but other people too. You have to be smart and think ahead as to how you’re not only going to pay next month’s utilities, but the two months after that too. If you so much as stop thinking about how your business is going to carry on, you’ll drop the ball and the risk then is keeping it going without failing.

In conclusion, risk taking has got me where I am today, 3866 miles away from home, 1 business in the UK, and 2 businesses in the US, without taking those risks I’d still be working a 9am to 5pm regular job, they’ve all been risks worth taking!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started out just making the basic chakra crystal beaded bracelets, but then the more I started working with them the more I got interested in the other crystals available too. It was something I instinctively knew about so it became peaceful and therapeutic for me to work with them. I started making more and more bracelets, explaining how the crystals could help with ailments and how they benefited people’s health.

One thing lead to another, and I then started making necklaces, rings, and earrings. People would come to my booth and ask if I had a particular crystal jewelry and when I didn’t I’d just go home and make them. My best sellers are the crystal chip bracelets and the crystal stud earrings. I then started creating my own spiritual cards; over the time I’d been learning how to strengthen my gifts I’d had mentors and outside influences give me hints and tips, so I put them all together and created the ‘Whispy Gypsy Deck’. I’m currently in the process of making my own tarot card deck too so it makes it easier for others to learn the skill too.

What sets me apart from others is my sustainability when it comes to sourcing my products, I hand write every single tag that is on my products and I’m not out to take what isn’t deserved. I’m not pricing my products too expensive so that only a set target audience can afford them, I want everyone to enjoy my jewelry and benefit from it’s properties.

I’m most proud of where I’ve come from and how I’ve got there. I had never made jewelry before, this is all self taught and something I never thought I’d enjoy half as much as I do. I’m always excited about making new things and letting my imagination run wild with what I can create. We have a lot in the pipeline, which I won’t give away now, but watch this space!!

Nothing is easy these days, but then again, if it isn’t hard, is it worth having? I want to put blood, sweat and tears into something because if I’m not, then I’m not passionate about what I’m doing. I grew up in a retail environment so I’m used to that and know it like the back of my hand, but observing it and then actually doing it, are two completely different things. Going form the flea market to having my own brick and mortar store within a year is what I’m most proud of but it was a difficult journey; everything revolves around money and it’s not like I have buckets of it stashed away; I’d budgeted for the store but obviously that budget then ends up growing. It’s a stressful process but when you see the store done and the reward it gives you, it’s completely worth it.

I started Whispy Gypsy because I want to help people, whether it’s through my Reiki and healing someone, or helping them with pain or anxiety; if it’s giving them guidance in life through a Tarot reading, or connecting to a past loved one so they know they’re there with that person every step of the way through life. I want the world to know that Whispy Gypsy is a comfort blanket for people while also making them look glamorous at the same time 😀

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Having come from the UK and only lived in Michigan for a couple of years, I’m still discovering new places here. My best friend came to visit this time last year, we ate at dive bars (we don’t have those at home), we did the Detroit Riverwalk and took pictures alongside Canada on the other side of the river. We visited the MoTown Museum which was awesome, as well as went shopping in Troy at the Somerset shopping mall. I love speakeasys so we would go and find those, I’d take her to Black Salt which is my favourite witchy bar in Hamtramk. I live on the lake so we’re never short on boats, so taking a trip to Muskamoot and partying on the water is always a great time, usually a Sunday Funday thing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents have been my biggest fans throughout my life, never not encouraging me to follow my dreams. My parents are entrepreneurs and I’ve certainly followed in their footsteps and had the best role models in them to get to where I am now. The main person who has guided me into my Whispy Gypsy venture was my Nana; and she still is. She died of cancer in 2021 but I channel her now and she’s still very much a huge part of my business and my everyday tasks within my business.

Since being in the USA, you make new friends and those friends become the family you don’t have close to you; since moving to Michigan I’ve made some amazing friends, all who are very supportive, will come to me when they need guidance and trust in my gifts. Most importantly to me though, is having a partner who is supportive in what I do, and I’ve been lucky enough to find someone who wholeheartedly supports me in everything I do. My boyfriend Brandon was brought up with strong religious views but regardless to that, he always has an open mind and has supported me from the onset of me starting this venture. For that, I’ll be eternally grateful.

I’m a huge reader and I have hundreds of books that I still need to get through but the one author who I really connected with was Sonia Choquette; she made me realise what I was capable of doing and more importantly, how I could do it. I’ve read evry single one of her books at least twice, I still carry them around with me now. If it wasn’t for her, I don’t think my gifts would be half as powerful as what they are now.
