We had the good fortune of connecting with Emmelyn Lao Joel Benavides and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emmelyn Lao, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We have been working office jobs for 10+ years and realized how burnt out/boring it is. With both of our experiences and skillsets, we created a business that reflects who we are so we can get off the hamster wheel and enjoy life!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Emmelyn Lao, Co-Owner of I Dream of Palms. I started my career as a Staff Accountant and worked my way up to a Senior Accountant. I now work at an outsourced accounting firm where I have the opportunity to work with several clients in different industries. It was not easy getting to where I am today but with hard work and determination, I found a company that challenges me every day. As I advanced in my career, I have learned that having an open communication and setting realistic expectations/goals are important in one’s growth and self-esteem. I still have a lot to learn but I am confident that life is about taking risks and following your dreams and my dream is to create a business that I strongly believe in.
Joel Benavides, Co-Owner, works at an insurance company as a Senior Financial Analyst. He has worked there for 14 years. During his tenure at the company, he has had several promotions which has helped him with his analytical and forecasting skills. As a Senior in the company, it is essential to have very strong organizational skills especially when assisting in load management and working with other people to complete projects. Having these skills has made it easier and exciting to partner with Joel. There is no doubt Joel’s experiences & skills will help make our company profitable going forward.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If our best friend was visiting from out of town, we would take him/her to Universal Studios. It is a great place to eat, drink, hangout, enjoy the rides/shows, meet new people, and be a kid again. On the second day, we will take them to Venice Beach where we can rent out bikes, bar/food hop, enjoy the views, hear great music, shop, and dive into LA culture. On the third day, we will take a ride up and down LA’s oldest city, Highland Park. There are a lot of quirky spots to visit that are walking distance from each other. On the fourth day, we will take them to a Dodger or Laker game, which is a must in LA culture. On the last day, we can lounge by the pool at the Standard in DTLA.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would like to thank our moms for believing in our business and allowing us to store materials at their houses. Another shoutout goes to Jacquie Lowe from Heron & Pine for recommending us for this article. Last but not least, a big shoutout to Emily Ruiz from LOVE ALWAYS, EM for giving us the opportunity to work with her and entrusting our creativity with her clients.
