We had the good fortune of connecting with Erick Miseroy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erick, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always been “busy”. When I met my wife, I was already in college full time, and coaching soccer. Then I starting teaching high school, coaching, and I also was breeding reptiles as a side hustle. Each of these avenues should be a full time job. I have always managed to make things work- and my focus on one avenue will adjust as need be. When that avenue needs to close it does; but of course then another idea finds itself in my head and get developed. I am lucky, I have an extremely understanding wife, but she also has dealt with my schedule since the very beginning. I am also lucky to have been successful with the different jobs that I have had- and they last several years. My balance is probably 65/35 towards work. I work 7 days a week. Today: I teach HS, where I am also the IT Coordinator. I am the Technical Director of a major soccer club, I help run a soccer Goalkeeping Academy (IGA/ www.gk4life.net), I have a photography business (www.mizzyphotography.com), and I just created an LLC called VP Fine Art, which holds oil painting classes for adults in San Pedro. It’s what I do. Work has always been the majority of my time. The only thing that has changed over time, is my ability to handle projects, and how much I am getting paid.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been called a modern day Dr. Jekyll- Mr. Hyde. Many people know me as Mizzy the soccer coach, but there is entire different group of people who know me as Mizzy the photographer. Photography is something that I have been doing for many years, my photos were first published in a magazine in 1999 when I was taking photos for fellow reptile breeders working with rare reptile species. The past 15 years, I have focused on landscape and portrait work. I regularly sell my landscape work, and have been busy with weddings, and family and life style photography. I am lucky in the fact that i do not depend on my photography to pay bills, or support my family. But I have a regular clients, and keep a fairly busy shooting schedule. Today, I am the only high school teacher who has an educational partnership with Nikon USA; this is normally a program that is for colleges. However, with the robustness of my program, they felt it appropriate to get involved and support us. I dont think it was easy, to get a relationship like this it takes years of program development and administrative support.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Depending on how this person fits in my life, would depend on where we would go. Assuming I have a week off- we would probably start in Los Angeles, and work the South Bay, then head to Vegas or Laughlin.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother worked 2 jobs her entire life, and this is where I probably get my work ethic from. When I was playing soccer in college, my head coach Marine Cano became very important to me and helped guide through my coaching career, and still to this day holds an important role.
