We had the good fortune of connecting with Erika Guerrero and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erika, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
That’s easy! You never give up, this goes for any goal in life. If you’re passionate enough you’ll enjoy the journey that comes with the struggle of having an idea or vision come to life. It’s okay to have slow months or weeks in your business but you learn from that and keep going. There’s always new ways to approach your goals, new ideas, new people, new opportunities. You can rest but giving up isn’t an option.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I want the world to know that when I started this brand It wasn’t for me. This brand wasn’t something I created for myself It was more so for my dog Boots. This brand was catered for him hence the name Boots And Wicks. We were in the middle of the pandemic and I wasn’t employed. We had just taken Boots for his check up and they informed us that he was diagnosed with a heart murmur. The vet bills rack up so fast considering he’s soon to be 17 years old. He has a special diet that we also provide. I then knew I needed to create something to fund his bills.

I did the best research I could and provide non toxic, vegan, cruelty free, handmade, hand poured candles. We use coconut wax and non toxic oils. It wasn’t easy at first considering there’s a whole math to making candles. It was hard finding the right wick to the right jar and also finding out what works and what doesn’t. Not only our story sets us apart but our dedication to providing the best in our eyes for our customers health. We also see candles as canvases and decorate them according. Always finding the best next drop.

What I’m most proud of being able to create this for my best friend and my ability to not give up. Also the growth I’ve seen in myself since I started this business. Ive learned that anything I set my mind to I can Achieve. Since things have now opened back up after the pandemic I’ve juggled a 9-5 job and my business. It’s not easy but I handle it with class. Someday I hope to do candles full time.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some places Boots and I love to go to are Pasadena. He loves the open streets and how clean it is. The streets are full with amazing restaurants. We also love to stop by at Tpumps and support another small business. If you go to Mid City there’s a small business clothing store Persona that is also dog friendly. Anything dog friendly count us in. We live by Echo Park so we visit often for strolls.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost God! Im blessed to even be in this position because of him. Secondly my family, my mother, boyfriend, brother and my muse Boots. Without them Boots & Wicks wouldn’t be a thing. Thirdly my community. The people around me that took my idea with open arms and supported by sharing, buying. People I went to school with or have worked with the people of LA. The small businesses around me that guided me and allowed me to do pop-ups. I’ve been so grateful!
