We had the good fortune of connecting with Eugenia Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eugenia, what principle do you value most?
Our values form the foundation of our lives, and based on our values, we make choices that impact our relationships, our career, and other activities we engage in. After pondering for a long time what values I live by, it is hard to identify with a specific value because it has evolved overtime along my life journey – and all the values of past and present together shaped me to become the person that I am today. I have a much different focus now from 20 years ago when I began my professional career in design for the toy and the themed entertainment industries. Growing up I developed a passion for art. Doing little doodles was my escape from my family who fought and struggled over financial problems for as long as I can remember. Naturally, my hobby became my profession. For years, I chased after financial and career success to strive for achievements… looked for external validations to earn my place in this world. I had a successful design business for more than 10 years and traveled around the globe for prestigious projects and high profile clients. Often, I worked long hours for days, chasing accolades became my reason of being… until I took a huge stumble three years ago when I got a divorce. I had to close down my design business which I formed with my ex-husband and rebuild my life again in a way. This made me really pondered about my personal value; to redefine the meaning of “success”. Through three years of self work to heal personally and rebuilding my business, often times I had to take many steps back and stayed stagnant for a while before progressing forward. I learned to be patient and focus on taking one step at a time – and to celebrate every win along the way. Instead of focusing on the end game, “growth” and “perseverance” became the core values that kept me going climbing one hill after another. I was reminded to continue to be curious, to have unwavering faith to overcome all challenges, and to continue to advance steadily while enjoy the journey along the path to the mountain top. People often only talk about the success stories, but seldom do people talk about the challenges leading up to it. What became clear to me also is my value for personal life and business is really one and the same, and the change in my personal value has transformed the core value of the new business as well. . I have co-founded a new design business Launchmode Design Company with new partners whom are not only extremely talented, but I can also trust and can count on to continue provide top notch design services in the toys and experiential entertainment industries. Delivering successful projects is still what we strive for, and we now focus on building solid foundation through every design process. We emphasize on the journey we take through collaboration with the clients to co-create optimal results by asking lots of questions, working hand in hand with our clients as partners rather than just providing a service. Together, we continue to refine our designs, building prototypes, refine our concepts and ideas until we come up with the best solution not just for our partner, but also for their audiences. Design service is really the business to solve people’s problems, it is no different from overcoming personal daily challenges. For both our personal lives and our work, we are continuously making mistakes, and then we are always making things better; continue to reinvent and grow. It fulfills me and makes me so proud to be able to make a living by utilizing my creative talents to help people. I see every new project’s challenge as a new opportunity to grow and learn from, just like seeing everyday a brand new way.
What should our readers know about your business?
The thing I learned that has really helped me in running my own company begins with the questions: ‘What makes things work?’ ‘What makes something great?’ The answer is to begin with a story: not just any story but a story that involves guests from the very first moment and puts them at the center of the adventure. And the way to do that is to involve the client from the first moment: to do everything in harmony with the intention of the client. Create a deep, meaningful partnership with the client from the beginning so the story works for everyone. We’re in the business of making people happy. We get to use our creative gifts to make that happen. I get to use everything I learned and pass it along to everyone I meet in my business. Launchmode Design Co. LLC, is a team of creatives that help make ideas take flight. Whether it is launching a product, a brand, or an experience – the success for our client’s vision is our mission. Designing for a project is like launching a rocket – if your trajectory is off by inches at launch, you can be off by miles out in orbit. It is important for us to set a firm foundation in the creative process from step one. If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being in the industry designing theme parks, naturally when friends come to town we would go visit local theme parks such as Universal Studio, Disneyland or Disney California Adventure. Personally, I prefer having quiet time just enjoying meditative walks in a park. Couple of my favorite places are Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine, and Peace Awareness Labyrinth & Gardens. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am extremely thankful for all my family and friends for shaping the person that I am today. My mom, dad, and aunt Olivia – and especially my sister Barbara. Thank you for all of your support through all of my ups and downs. Thank you Erik, for being the strongest and sweetest little boy who allows me to love unconditionally as a mother, and also learning and growing along side with you.
