We had the good fortune of connecting with Ev Marquee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ev, how does your business help the community?
We’ve all heard Gandhi’s famous quote “Be the change that you wish to see in the world” – which basically means that in order to create peace, love, harmony or any other high vibrating reality for ourselves, we must first delve inward & start with self. So if we, for example, want to see & receive love in our worlds, we first need to BE love. And to BE love, we must be willing to open our hearts and find acceptance with who we are. That’s when the shift in our environment begins. The shift within ourselves then leads to actions & behaviors that reflect that love and acceptance, initiating a ripple effect that then positively impacts our realities, starting with our closest people, our communities and ultimately the world. My mission as a WOC creative/visual artist who is an advocate for self love and transformation is to assist in the shift by capturing and highlighting the divinity, raw essence & beauty I see in the world – especially in those who I believe to be most sacred in this time and space: people of color, those within the alternative holistic wellness industry & Mother Earth. I like to think of artistic co-creation a type of self love ritual, one that allows the opportunity to authentically self express and be seen. Your essence is reflected in the form of beautiful art and that art becomes a physical reminder of who you are: powerful, magical, unique, essential. I want to see beauty, love, justice and self empowered people in the world. And that is possible when we can see how even a photoshoot project can be a radical act of self love (an investment in self to honor and see oneself newly) with the potential to create infinite ripples of healing that can make way for that.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a visual artist and storyteller who specializes in natural light photography, documentary film and intimate portraits that embody a love for the sensual and magical, while empowering raw beauty and natural ethos and esthetic. I am currently working on a documentary called “Stepping into the New Paradigm”. It is a film following myself and my best friend/business partner as we road trip across the United States, from California to South Carolina. The film project will document a journey deeply grounded in spirit and the desire to co-create a new paradigm. It’s actually fun to reminisce and think about how I got where I am professionally. I typically stay very private and don’t share much of myself but find that my story tends to impress or surprise many. I am a queer, self taught first generation Mexican creative, born in Mexico and raised in LA. Growing up in a single parent home, with a parent who didn’t speak the language (plus some trauma along the way) wasn’t easy BUT I was always very curious person with a deep desire for knowledge and freedom that got me where I am today. At one point in my life after graduating college (UCLA) I had the opportunity to travel. My journey led me to many places such as Egypt, Israel, Thailand and Japan. My whole life changed. I did not want to go back for a masters degree as I had planned and instead bought myself a very expensive DSLR (what I originally wanted to study). I dove right in, literally reading the manual from beginning to end and putting myself out there. I did roaming photography at queer events, became the resident photographer for several LA parties including a regular event at the Echoplex (a famous LA venue) which meant photographing all the bands that came through onstage and backstage and before I knew it I was vip at Coachella as M.I.A.’s photographer for her main stage comeback ( famous for “Paper Planes”). I then transitioned into editorial work – shooting models, actors & musicians. Soon after I took residency at a beautiful studio in the Arts District and really refined my style. Since then I’ve also had the opportunity to do aerial photography for a helicopter company which meant monthly heli rides with incredible views. My latest passion has been filmmaking. I am obsessed with dance/movement, nature and am especially interested in short films and music videos.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Off top, here are some of my favorites! 1. GREYSTONE MANSION & GARDENS! This beautiful mansion has gardens that are open to the public. Not many know about it and it’s a beautiful place for shoots! 2. Sage Plant Based Bistro & Brewery – for yummy vegan eats. 3. Wi Spa – for some Korean Spa relaxation 4. El Matador Beach – very beautiful and one of my favorite places to shoot
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Big shoutout to my LA community – my family, tribe and clients. There are too many people to name but thank you to the individuals who were there from the beginning as I went from buying my first camera to years of developing my personal style and putting together my first collection and art event. Your trust and belief in my passion/vision was everything.
