We had the good fortune of connecting with Eva Reyes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eva, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
It’s human nature to feel afraid of taking risks but i believe that taking risks is part of our everyday lives. Certain decisions we make that we feel uncertain of is in fact taking a risk. I’m one to feel uncertain about making decisions that make me feel uneasy but to be honest, i would not be where i am today if i didn’t take risks. Starting a business was a huge risk that i kept going back and forth about for almost a year. The push that made me make that decision was that i didn’t want to live with that “what if” feeling in the back of my head. If taking that risk were to lead to failure, then i would be content with the fact that i tried rather than not taking the risk.
What should our readers know about your business?
Blood Babe Cosmetics is all about bringing the horror world and the makeup world together, while empowering women, men, individuals who want to express themselves unconditionally through our products. We handmake our cosmetics, which i believe is what sets us apart. We put in all of our love, sweat and tears into our brand and we handmake them while thinking of our supporters. We want our supporters to feel more than just a customer-they are the face of our brand and the reason why we are here today! I’m definitely most proud of being a Latina in the horror community to create something that can inspire other Latinx to be apart of a community where we aren’t really represented and have our voices heard.
With the help of wonderful people and the support of people who believed in me, i took a leap into opening my own business. I did a lot of research for almost a year and collected resources about the type of business i was opening. I kept going back and fourth about the idea even though i already had everything ready. I constantly kept asking other businesses for tips and some sort of mentoring, just so i can be sure about what i was doing. I eventually just went for it and i don’t regret anything. It definitely wasn’t an easy journey, i had many obstacles to overcome. For example, having to deal with the fact that not everyone is going to like what i make. Those small tough moments just make me grow thick skin for this business world and builds me into a better business owner. That’s a huge lesson i had to learn; to not take everything personally when it comes to my business; Overall, the business journey has been amazing throughout, with or without challenges.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When it comes to Los Angeles, there are so many hidden gems that are yet to be discovered and so many amazing places to enjoy. My first choice would be taking them to the Griffith Observatory so they can get the most amazing view of Los Angeles. Then, i absolutely have to take them to Downtown Los Angeles, where they can get the famous street dogs. They are a staple to Los Angeles cuisine along with local taco spots. Next, having them visit a few museums like MOMA is a must! I feel like the museums in our city are very slept on. They contain some of the most interesting art. I would end their trip with taking them to our city bars/brewery like Angels brewery and my all time favorite bar, Bar Eightytwo.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
i’m forever grateful for the individuals in my life for believing in me and making an impact to push me to where i am today. First, a HUGE shoutout to the small business community for mentoring me and giving me tips in the beginning of my business journey. Thank you for helping others empower themselves and welcoming small businesses/creators with open arms. Another huge shout out to my friends who have helped make my brand come alive whether it was with something big or small: Anthony, Andrew, Erika, Derek, Gabby, THANK YOU. A very special shoutout to the one person who supports my crazy ideas, gives me unconditional support and love, and believes in me even when i don’t believe in myself; thank you from the bottom of my heart to my partner Rudy.
