We had the good fortune of connecting with Eve Karlin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eve, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
In February, 2019 I solo-traveled through Thailand and Bali. During this time, I trained my clients virtually to make sure they stayed consistent with achieving results while I was on vacation. When I came home, I was furloughed 3 weeks later. In despair, I knew I needed to take action and figure out my next moves on staying positive during trying times while still being able to make an income.
I remembered how great virtual training was and realized that so many others were in a challenging place. I decided that with my skill-set as a Personal Trainer, I could help make a difference to keep others smiling and healthy. I created a donation-based Sunday Funday themed workout. Every week, we had one hour to forget about all of our stress, get silly by dressing up as the week’s theme, and work on our health and fitness in a HIIT workout class. From there, I started offering one on one sessions that were also donation-based. The idea was that those who could not donate would pay it forward in acts of kindness.
Before I knew it, I had created a community where we together were able to work towards our health and fitness goals while having fun. The name, On The Go Fit, represents being able to train anywhere and anytime! As both a Travel Expert and Personal Trainer, I have found ways in my business to help my clients stay active ‘on the go.’ My clients just need a phone or computer to stay on track whether they are at home or on vacation!
My sessions are 30 minute virtual training sessions customized to my clients needs. I have found my clients stay more consistent with this structure and have achieved amazing results. On The Go Fit also offers a self-paced subscription workout program, mini retreats, and tons of fitness challenges!!
On The Go Fit incorporates travel, fitness, and fun tied into one! I am grateful for the fit-fam we have created, inspired by the results my clients have achieved, and excited to see this business grow internationally!!!
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My business was far from easy. I had just gotten my dream job as the Senior dotFIT Educator. Knowing this job would start on March 1, I took a month off to solo-travel throughout Thailand and Bali. During my adventure, I spent a lot of money knowing this was a once in a lifetime trip. In fact, I even called it my ‘Me-Moon.’ Yes…I wined and dined myself.
When I came back from this trip of a lifetime, I was ready to work and make money. 3 weeks into my new job, I was furloughed. I had nowhere to go to get another job. Gyms were closed. Restaurants were closed. What was I going to do? How was I going to keep a roof over my head and food on my table?
I went to the grocery store in despair ready to bag groceries. I realized the pay was the same amount as unemployment, yet unemployment would only get me so far with my bills. That’s when On The Go Fit was created.
My business started with everything being donation-based. I was used to charging $150/Session for Personal Training. I had to swallow my pride knowing my worth yet also knowing donation-based sessions will help so many people who needed an outlet.
After about 6 months of keeping everything donation-based, I started charging for my sessions and created a true business plan. The biggest lesson I took from this experience is that creating a dream into reality will be achieved through hard-work, adapting to current situations, and staying persistent.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting the area, I would want to show them all of my favorite places!
I would start the week by hiking Runyon Canyon which is right where I live. After the hike, I would drive us to Urth Caffe in Beverly Hills to people watch while eating a delicious brunch. After that, I would go to the beach in Malibu and watch the sunset at Rafi’s Lounge.
I would make sure we had brunch at Bacari, eat Israeli food at Taeem, and enjoy a dinner with the best martinis at Musso and Franks. I would also make sure to get some authentic Mexican food at El Compadre with a flaming margarita.
I would show my best friend the ‘LA scene’ by going to a taping or taking a tour at Warner Bros. Followed by a comedy show at the Laugh Factory.
I would try to make a connection to get access to the Magic Castle for an epic night and spend the next day walking through the Larchmont Farmer’s Market and then go biking through Venice and Santa Monica.
A true Los Angeles trip would of course need In n’ Out and some shopping at the Grove!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My business would never have prospered if it wasn’t for the O.T.G. FIT family. I am incredibly grateful for every single person who showed up to classes, came to the retreats, participated in the fitness challenges, and continuously train with me. This has been a trying year but this community came together to motivate each other from all over the country.
I want to give a shoutout to my friends and family who believed, supported, and encouraged me to continue pursuing my dream of owning my virtual personal training business. Their constant encouragement helped me persevere each and every day.
Finally, a shoutout to Neal Spruce! My biggest Mentor who I look up to in countless ways. Neal is an absolute legend in the fitness industry who never fails to give me the utmost best advice. I hope to follow his footsteps to ‘save the world through health and fitness.’
