We had the good fortune of connecting with Evelyn Avila and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Evelyn, what inspires you?
I’m inspired by a lot of different things. People, nature, traveling, books, magazines, movies and natural light. I really enjoy how  sunlight falls on things and people. I almost forgot, I also love black and white photographs. They always take me back to where I started.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am a Queer Latina Wedding + Portrait Photographer based in California. I go anywhere my camera takes me. It feels like I’ve been photographing my entire life. Growing up in South Central Los Angeles was a bit crazy but fun at the same time. My parents made sure to keep my siblings and me on track. I watched a lot of tv and dreamt about how my life would be when I grew up. My parents always supported my ideas of being a creative person. I went to a design school (FIDM) in DTLA and also College for Photography in LA. I knew I wanted to do something creative but didn’t quite know until I paid attention to what was right in front of me…my camera. I’m so happy that I decided to go full-time in the wedding industry 5 years ago. I pour my heart into every wedding and every couple that comes into my life. I want people to know that you have to work hard and with a lot of good energy and passion about what you want in life. Give it you’re all. One hundred percent. Always see the good in people. And when things don’t go your way then it wasn’t meant to be. I learned this lesson in the beginning when I started my business. I kept questions everything… “why is this couple ghosting me?”… after a while, I realize that when things aren’t meant to be it’s for a good reason. I’ve been so lucky to connect with amazing couples that trust me and love my work. I’m so grateful. This is what keeps me going.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love this question… I love my beautiful city of Long Beach! I would start by taking them to one of my favorite coffee shops in downtown Long Beach called Recreational Coffee for their amazing lattes! After we would get breakfast at Ubuntu Cafe for their amazing breakfast and atmosphere. I’m all about the food, atmosphere and customer service. That is very important to me. Then we would go walk around the marina and rent a duffy boat for a few hours and take wine and appetizers from one of my favorite local markets Olives Gourmet Grocer. After our ride, we would probably go take a nap to recharge and then we would go to continue the party at Art du Vin or District wine… or maybe both. I love supporting my local businesses. Dinner would be at Seabirds Kitchen (vegan) restaurant or The Ordinarie for the food and amazing cocktails. Apparently, I love to drink wine. I just enjoy having glasses of wine when my loved ones are around me and especially if they enjoy wine too! Which most of my friends do.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Family and Friends. They have believed in me and supported me from day one. Oh and my little fur children Merlot and Sauvi.
