We had the good fortune of connecting with Farzad Golpayegani and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Farzad, what role has risk played in your life or career?
It played an important role. I believe I risked everything I achieved when I moved from my home country about 11 years ago. I lived in multiple countries and eventually states and cities in US. Usually, creatives get the best result where they develop their fan base and eventually build their brand in one location. I already had followers for my art and music when I decided to move, but I risked moving in order to grow and progress in my professional life and career. I face a lot of hardship during the years, and to be honest I am just recently getting a bit settled! But I believe the risk totally worth it. Your readers might wonder how successful I in my career am, and I want to clarify that I believe success is a relative subject. I don’t necessary consider those who make a lot of money or have a lot of followers successful in general. In my case, and in my opinion, I might consider myself successful because I achieved an expert level in what I do, and I try to enhance my skills every day. I don’t financially make a lot of my music and art (as painting and drawing), but I’m happy that when I create an artwork, I don’t worry if I can sell it well or not. I simultaneously work on music and art, and also work full-time job as art director, designer, and motion designer. So, I risked a lot through the years to get to this point in my life. That being said, currently I don’t risk leaving my day job to only spend time on my personal music and art!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My music is mostly progressive metal and fusion, and my art is close to surreal. Both require technical skills. I have spent a lot of time rehearsing and practicing. I still do, so that I can stay updated. I willingly give up a lot of social life in order to find the time for it. However although my work might seem complex and technical at the first sight, but the main characteristic of it is the deep message. I don’t find any reason to create something if it doesn’t have anything to say. I try to combine elements from different cultures and styles, to create something new and beyond a particular region.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would show a bit of every interesting aspect of the city. Night life downtown and Santa Monica, Beautiful botanic gardens such as Huntington, Beautiful beaches like Venice beach, to name a few.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have high school diploma and BA in Graphic design, and I had amazing mentors. My father also was an artist but I unfortunately didn’t have the chance to learn from him directly, since he passed away when I was so young. Regarding my music career, I had an amazing guitar teacher who introduced me to music theory (although my music is mainly rock, my teacher was a jazz musician). Also my older brother has always been very supportive. Until this day he is one of the the first people that I ask for his feedback when I have a new material.
