We had the good fortune of connecting with Gary Bonney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gary, how do you think about risk?
I see risk as a chance to grow. While opportunities can come with a cost depending on the situation, there comes a point where you’ve already reached a certain level, and taking one or two more steps won’t hurt- Especially when you’re thinking longterm. That mindset is what led me to base myself in Los Angeles. When one door closed, I took a big leap, packed up, and moved from Northern California to Los Angeles, and my life has completely changed since then; in the best ways. Taking risks is a major part of who I am because I’m not afraid of the outcome. At the end of the day, what matters most is that I try.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What separates me as a barber is my uniqueness. My work is crisp and precise, but what really sets me apart is who I am as a person and the relationships I build with my clients—that’s priceless. It’s like sitting in a room with your favorite artist or actor and actually getting to connect with them. That experience alone means everything.
Getting here wasn’t easy. Trials and tribulations don’t even fully explain it—consistency does. I had to overcome a lot just to leave Northern California, and even more came with taking the risk of dropping everything and moving to LA to figure it out.
Now that I’m here and have built my business, I am truly blessed & thankful. However one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned isn’t the cliché “there are no days off.” It’s that every day counts. Waking up and having the chance to positively impact someone’s life is powerful.
That’s why I truly believe that whatever you put your mind to, you can achieve. Most importantly, trusting yourself, stay true to who you are, and always remember your why.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That’s a great question—I deal with this all the time since my friends from back home visit pretty often. It really depends on who’s coming, and I’ll still be working during the week, but I like to keep things simple and enjoyable.
Usually we’ll start with a nice brunch, somewhere in Downtown or Santa Monica, especially if the weather’s good. Then we’ll hit the beach, take in the views, and just vibe out. From there, we might catch a sporting event or a concert depending on what’s going on in the city.
We don’t try to overdo it—some days are more laid back. We’ll definitely go out for a nice dinner in Hollywood, and at some point during their stay, I’ll take them up to Griffith for a hike and a good view of the city.
That’s pretty much my style—keeping it simple, fun, and a little adventurous.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I want to give a huge shoutout to my support system and my day ones; their words and belief in me from the very beginning still mean everything today. To all my clients, from the Bay to LA, anyone who’s ever booked with me or even sat in my chair, this is all about you. Moving forward, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the city of Los Angeles for embracing and welcoming me, as well as all the creatives and individuals I’ve had the privilege of building relationships with.
