We had the good fortune of connecting with Genie Wu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Genie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued a career in graphic design because it beautifully merges creativity with problem-solving. From a young age, I was captivated by how visuals could convey powerful messages and evoke emotions. This fascination grew as I explored different art forms, but it was the world of graphic design that truly resonated with me.

Studying at art college has deepened my understanding of design principles and allowed me to experiment with various styles and techniques. Each project feels like a new adventure, where I can express ideas and tell stories through color, typography, and composition. I love the challenge of taking a client’s vision and transforming it into something visually striking and meaningful.

My passion for graphic design extends beyond just aesthetics; I’m fascinated by the impact design has on communication and culture. It’s rewarding to know that my work can influence perceptions and bring brands to life. I find joy in collaborating with peers, exchanging ideas, and pushing each other to think outside the box.

As I continue my studies, I’m eager to learn more about the latest design trends and technologies, and how they can enhance my work. Ultimately, I see graphic design as a dynamic field where I can grow creatively and make a difference. I’m excited about the journey ahead and look forward to contributing my unique perspective to the design world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art reflects my journey from Taiwan to the United States, where I’ve thrived amidst a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and experiences. This diverse background fuels my passion for graphic design, allowing me to draw inspiration from the vibrant visuals and stories around me. Each encounter has shaped my perspective, helping me create bold, powerful imagery that resonates with others.

What sets me apart is my ability to blend these varied influences into my work. I focus on capturing the essence of moments, using color and typography to evoke emotions and convey messages. I’m most proud of how my designs tell stories—whether through a poster that sparks conversation or a brand identity that reflects a unique vision.

The journey hasn’t always been easy. Adapting to a new culture presented challenges, and balancing schoolwork with personal growth was often overwhelming. However, I learned to embrace these difficulties as opportunities for growth. By seeking feedback, collaborating with peers, and staying open to new ideas, I found ways to overcome obstacles and refine my craft.

Ultimately, I want the world to see my art as a celebration of diversity and a testament to resilience. My story is one of observation and appreciation for the beauty in every experience. I hope my designs inspire others to embrace their own journeys and express their unique voices in a colorful, meaningful way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting, I’d kick off the week with a delicious brunch at République. Its vibrant atmosphere and amazing pastries are the perfect start to the day. Or the cutest brunch place at Sqirl. After fueling up, we’d stroll around Melrose Avenue and West Hollywood for some eclectic shopping, checking out unique boutiques and vintage shops.

In the afternoon, we could relax at Griffith Park, where we’d hike to the observatory for stunning views of the city and the Hollywood sign. As the sun sets, it’s time for dinner! I’d take them to K-Town for some mouthwatering Korean BBQ. Alternatively, we could explore the Arts District for a unique Japanese dining experience, immersing ourselves in the vibrant food scene.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my incredible instructor and the supportive friends who have been with me through this journey. My instructor has been a guiding light throughout my time at art college. Their unwavering encouragement and insightful feedback have not only helped me grow as a designer but also instilled a sense of confidence in my creative abilities. They have a unique way of challenging us to push our boundaries while also providing the support we need to explore our ideas freely. Their passion for graphic design is infectious, and it inspires me to dig deeper into my own work and find my voice.

Equally important are my friends, who have been my rock during the toughest times. Balancing coursework, projects, and personal challenges can be overwhelming, and having a supportive group makes all the difference. Whether it’s late-night study sessions, brainstorming ideas, or just lending an ear when things get tough, their presence has been invaluable. We motivate each other, celebrate our victories, and help each other through setbacks. Knowing that I have a solid support system gives me the courage to take risks in my designs and embrace challenges with a positive mindset.

Together, my instructor and friends have played a crucial role in my development, and I’m deeply grateful for their influence. They remind me that success isn’t just about individual effort; it’s a collective journey shaped by the people around us. As I continue to grow in my graphic design career, I carry their lessons and support with me, always remembering the importance of community in achieving our dreams.

I want to give a special shoutout to ARTBOOK @ Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles. This incredible bookstore is a treasure trove of inspiration, featuring a curated selection of art books that ignite my creativity. It’s a place where ideas flourish, and I always leave feeling inspired and rejuvenated!
