We had the good fortune of connecting with Halley Strongwater and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Halley, what matters most to you?
Loam is founded on the basis that helping more people interact with the natural world, through plant walks, medicine making overnights, or our products will help them value the earth more. When you start to appreciate the simplicity of plant-based medicine and skincare that can make a tremendous difference in your overall health without fragrance, chemicals or preservatives you start to realize how crucial it is to maintain the health of every ecosystem.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We approach our business by maintaining the highest standards for sourcing, using only small US herb farms or our own homegrown herbs for our products, domestic oils (even our organic cane alcohol) and plastic free packaging. Loam is a New Mexico based business, and because of that we hold the deepest reverence for the land where we grow and harvest. I’m really proud of the rigorous standards we maintain for sourcing, and the efficacy and freshness of our products demonstrates those standards.
Our customers really demonstrate so much loyalty to us, and are a huge part of how I operate Loam. I took almost all of 2021 off after I had my second baby and that December we reopened and had one of our highest grossing months of all time. It showed me that our customers are devoted to Loam and that makes me want to keep doing this every day.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
New Mexico is truly one of my favorite places in the world, having grown up here I appreciate it so deeply. We would go for a hike and a swim in Jemez, eat lunch at Pasquale or Ozu in Santa Fe, and get to some of my favorite swimming holes. Everything we do in New Mexico revolves around being outside, and I love that about living here.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My customers are truly the people who inspire my products as well as my family! So many loam products have been made for my own children. Calm Down Cream is a diaper cream I started making for my kids when they were babies that is now one of our most popular products for rashes, eczema, you name it. We have also worked with so many incredible photographers like Christian Sorensen Hansen, who has helped us with video and photography over the years.
