We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Hart and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I love my clients. Generally, I book no more than one client a day, and the day is about them. Photography is all about people’s stories. You need to care about your client to be able to tell their stories. Clients are like snowflakes; no two are the same. Every picture I take is like a snowflake story; it is unique.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Most of my photography is outdoors, and I started off with a vision of how to use the natural world to make people look amazing! It was really an organic process, and there have been twists and turns, but it always comes back to the image. I need to feel connected to my photography and I have to believe I am creating art that people will have in their lives forever. What sets me apart: look at my work. My images speak for themselves. Any business has ups and downs, and I certainly have had to adapt. But it is really important to stay true to your vision and your art. No business will succeed without being flexible, but there is a difference between flexibility, and compromise. I still touch up each image before I let me clients see them. It would be simple to hit a button and run all of them together, but there is no one setting that will really address all images. You have to look at each one. The one thing I would want people to know is that when I am your photographer, I am there to create memories for a life time. The story of my story, is that my story is your story…how is that for branding?!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is going to be short. The beach. Maybe some wine at the beach. Maybe some pizza at the beach. Maybe some sushi at the beach (I love sushi). The only other thing I would add is the sunset. Also, my favorite hang out is Back on the Beaches Cafe in Santa Monica. I do lots of shooting there and it is like a little piece of heaven sitting outside in the sand with an iced cappuccino in hand.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is corny, but I really owe my success to my clients. There are many families where I have been the maternity photographer, the newborn photographer and the family photographer. I also do Senior Portraits, so I actually have a few of those as well. So to all my families… Thank you for letting me be a part of your life!
