We had the good fortune of connecting with Hydia Baldwin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hydia, how do you think about risk?
When I think of risks and how it may affect my career. I try my best to remember that nothing worth the while is possible without taking risks. I just decide if the is risk worth taking and will the risk have a beneficial outcome. From sales, to expanding my brand, or even something as simple as learning valuable information. None of what I just stated could even be possible unless I did not take the risk of putting my brand out there and quite frankly being a risk taker has affected my career for the better. Such as having an online vegan bakery that ships desserts.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart from others, is my ability to connect with others through my baking. I strongly believe you get what you put in. I make every dessert with love in hopes that my customers can taste the love and be filled with joy, and speaking of joy I am very proud of myself for not giving up on my business. It is very easy to give up on something you love when you don’t have a big support system but in spite of many challenges that I have faced and are still facing I remember that nothing worth keeping is ever easy. You should be willing to move mountains in order to get to where you’re going by simply doing the work and everything else will play in your favor.
Now I know this may sound easier said than done but if you are passionate such as myself about your business, dream, or even career it will all be worth it. Having a mentality to never give up contributes to how my business came about. Literally about two years ago I had the idea about selling baked goods because people always complimented whatever dessert I would make and I’ve always loved baking. So I started to brainstorm and buy supplies to start my business but I didn’t officially start my business until 9 months ago plus the tricky part that came into play is that I wasn’t a vegan then. So once I became serious and started to transition to a vegan lifestyle then that’s when Vegan Sweet’s & Treat’s came about.
In addition, I may or may have not mentioned this but creating my business was not easy. I faced many challenges as far as making sure I had enough money to fund my business, making sure every ingredient was vegan friendly, and just making sure I had desserts that would accommodate everyone. Plus facing these challenges did teach me a lot along the way. As far as believing in yourself, never giving up, and knowing your worth, I say these things because a lot of times I met people who didn’t believe in my dreams and people who would try to decrease the price of my desserts. So if anyone has met people like that, stand your ground because your time and effort is valuable and if people aren’t taking you seriously, show them why they should.
I would like people to know that Vegan Sweet’s & Treat’s, LLC. is a one in a million type of experience. We are diverse, caring, community driven, professional, and goal oriented. Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well if I had a best friend visiting Raleigh for a week I would say Elements is a good vegan restaurant to eat at for a girls night out, and Pure Soul located in Durham would be a nice place to eat and enjoy the outdoors. But as far as eating, a good indoor activity would be Frankies in Raleigh. I don’t do too many indoor places. I am more of an outdoor person, as far as hiking at one of Raleigh’s local trails, or riding a bike through downtown, or just going to a public park to paint.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Before I acknowledge my support system first and foremost I’d like to thank THE MOST HIGH because without him nothing would be possible. I am a spiritual person and strongly believe that I have been blessed with the ability to touch people through my cooking and kind words. I love to talk to people especially if I know my words are going to help an individual through whatever they may be going through. Secondly, the shoutout series for featuring me and my partner for supporting me. Thirdly, I appreciate my mother who motivates me because she is the prime example on what it means to be strong. Even though I do not get along with my mother all the time I still love her and appreciate her for never giving up in life. Thirdly, my nephews and nieces motivate me alot. I want them to see that no matter what anyone says to them, how they are treated in society, and despite where they come from they can be anything they put their mind to.
