We had the good fortune of connecting with Iona Burciaga and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Iona, what do you attribute your success to?
Success is only achieved when you are able to serve and encourage others to be successful alongside you. If you strive for success in pride, you can achieve success but end up empty.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I try not to take what I have for granted because I know God is the reason I have been placed where I am. I could have not met the people I have met or get to do what I love without faith in him. There are times where I have wanted to give up, due to failure and setbacks and minding my own ego, but like anything you get up and try again until something gives. By no means is it easy. Being an entrepreneur and creating business’ out of nothing is one of the hardest things a person can do. But the plus side is, it has taught me resilience.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When I’m in LA, I love seeing my good friends at Walnut house, they’re the funnest and funniest people alive. I’m always skating with Daisy and we’re always at a new Mexican Taco truck. Or I’m at every health food store with Salinna and my God son Max. On Sunday’s I’m at Mosaic in Hollywood! Skating El Sereno or Mayberry park! Whole Foods forever. Rose Park or Loose Leaf Tea in Long Beach are my regular go to coffee/tea spots.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
God, Vanessa Torres, Briana King, Demarquis Mcdaniels, Ben Kilpatrick, and Jeff Robins. I remember chasing success and found it to be empty at a time where I was really down. I found Briana’s meet ups by accident. I had no idea who she was but I found one of her flyers on instagram and felt led to attend. Ironically the day I attended, she was doing a photoshoot of all the other skaters who attended. I met Briana that day and a ton of other girl skaters, many who I am still friends with to this day. I started attending regularly and shooting photos of skateboarders and thats developed into pretty much my life now.
I met Vanessa at my local coffee shop. She’d see me pull up and yell, “Mija”! Always encouraging me to skate regardless of how much of a beginner I was. We became friends, and had deep talks about life, God and skateboarding. She gave me a complete set up one day and it changed my life.
Jeff, Demar, and Ben all helped me a ton with photography. They inspired me, geeked out on photo stuff with me and genuinely helped me find that itch for photography and wanting to pursue it as a career. I am grateful for those days and learning from them, they are all very talented individuals.
