We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacob Israel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jacob, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Gotama was essentially born out of necessity — we couldn’t find the products we wanted, so we made our own. My co-founder had an insanely demanding schedule between martial arts, teaching, and stunt work. He was using performance supplements to keep him going but found that existing products weren’t designed for safe, effective, daily use. So he set out to create that suite of products. When we were introduced, I complained to him of the side effects I was suffering to get the benefit of my daily nootropic. He gave me a sampling of his nootropic, and about a year later that product became Gotama’s AWAKE.

What should our readers know about your business?
Gotama’s performance supplements were designed to be safely combined so that our customers can fuel with intent and confidence. We recognize that every day, every workout, and every body has unique needs. Using our Human System Method of formulation, we built a fully customizable suite so our customers can choose the support they need for any given challenge.

We’re extremely proud of the care we put into our formulations. Each product contains only effective functional dosages of the highest-quality ingredients available, so they give a complete benefit if taken individually, while also being dosed to be safely combined. We’re committed to honoring our customers’ dedication to their goals by providing them with the best fuel possible.

We’re most excited when people start to combine products in our suite. The flavors were selected and refined, so that that products will taste great in a single cup together. For example our AWAKE nootropic and READY pre-workout combine into a delicious watermelon lemonade blend that supports endurance, energy, and focus for your most demanding workouts.

It definitely wasn’t easy getting here business-wise. We take a great deal of care in vetting any partner we work with, so it took longer than anticipated to get Gotama running up to our standards. We couldn’t have done it without the guidance of our advisors and the generous knowledge-sharing from friends. Maintaining a focus on a long-term goals, and having alignment not just on what Gotama does by why we do it has allowed us to build great partnerships, and weather challenges.

I want the world to know that driving performance doesn’t have to come at a physical cost — you don’t have to borrow energy, or power, or focus, or productivity from the ledger of tomorrow for use today. It’s all about finding a solution that works best for you and your unique needs, and we’re committed to helping everyone reach their goals.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’d spend almost all of our time bouncing between burning calories with outdoor activities and putting them right back with amazing food.

There would definitely be a Malibu surf trip in the cards, as well as some hiking at Los Liones or Will Rogers park. A small tour of amazing tacos would be in order: Guerilla, Salazar, Sky’s, and Manzano would all be must-visits.

An architecture tour of the Getty Center would be in order, as well as a visit to the Broad, LACMA, and Petersen. I live in Culver City and have really grown fond of the jazzy bar scene on the ground floor of the Culver Hotel, so drinks there after dinner one night.

And depending on who’s in town some music at the Hollywood Bowl, The Troubadour, or Sound.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are too many people involved in supporting Gotama’s launch to thank them all individually here. But I definitely want to shout out the significant others of our founding team, who have each played an outsized role in our journey. Each of them has done very direct work for Gotama: from design and content creation, to outreach, proofreading countless social posts, and even hand packing envelopes. But they’ve also gone above and beyond to support us all through the everyday trials of running a startup. So shoutout Kelsey, Lexi, and Sam for all of that!
