Meet Jacques Philippe | Filmmaker & Fashion Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacques Philippe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jacques, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I believe art chose me. For as long as I can remember I was always drawn towards the concept of bringing an idea to life. I believe it is a unique capability we have as humans to bring an idea into fruition. They say an idea is one of the greatest seeds we can ever plant. That is also the meaning behind my fashion-line CHOIXIZ. It represents the choices we make in life which ultimately sets us on course for our purpose. My ability to express myself creatively is my purpose. My goal is to utilize my art to inspire others world wide. Whether its writing novels, film-making, or fashion, these are my creative outlets. That is what makes me feel free to artistically express myself which is needed in regards to the innovation of society. Every invention you see is an idea which came to life, and that alone is art in its own unique way.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When it comes to my art and passion, throughout the years I continue to expose myself to new ideas and business ventures. As an Author, Filmmaker, and Fashion Designer, I realized the world is constantly changing and evolving. We are living in times where a person can create a movie on their phone if their dedicated enough. I am inspired by creatives worldwide which keeps me motivated. Since I was a child I used to always play around with VHS and disposable cameras. I would draw all the time, in my notebooks, some of my favorite comic-book characters. One thing I instantly fell in love with as a child was movies. I remember the first time I saw Director and Writer Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film, I was hooked ever since. I remember watching films all the time with my mother who loved movies as well. Surprisingly she loved action movies more then anything, but it had to be a great story and character driven. Not only was I in love with movies but I was learning as well. I believe that was the seeds that was planted in me, which gave birth to my passion to write. Then I came across other Directors such as Spike Lee, John Singleton, Wayans Family, and Robert Townsend who really impacted my life. It made me realize that it is possible to tell unique stories and provide a different perspective on life that was not exploited. I would say my style of writing is a little bit of them all. There are also many other directors which I have studied as well such as Quentin Tarantino, who started in a Video store, Christopher Nolan, Antoine Fuqua and more. When I heard their stories for how they got to the point of being Hollywood’s most talented and high paid directors, I knew it was possible for me. I have faced many challenges such as lack of funding, equipment malfunctions, and even lack of support. Truth be told, not everyone will see or understand your vision. There times where Producers will turn down projects, but I never let that discourage me in any way. I was once told when one door closes, another door will open. So I found ways to still express my self creatively such as writing novels, creating fashion lines and then reinvest into my own film projects. At this point in time, there is no room for excuses. If you want it, you will find a way. If you truly love something, you will do what ever it takes no matter what. That’s what I wish to share with the world. To never give up hope, never stop chasing your dreams and also remain consistent. That’s the meaning behind my Film Production company which is Eyez On The Prize Productions. Your hunger should outweigh your circumstances. After all, they say success is when preparation and opportunity finally mean.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
From growing up in Massachusetts, I was always intrigued with California more so Los Angeles. From the palm trees, beaches, and mountainous views, there is always so much to explore. I grew up dealing with cold winters and 3 feet of snow my whole life. So the scenery alone in Los Angeles is beautiful to me. As a filmmaker, I knew this was the Mecca of the film industry. Whatever you’re passionate about, you can find some events or venues to hangout at with people in your career path. Me personally, I love going to brunches in West Hollywood area. You can never go wrong on a Tuesday getting the Taco specials and exploring the Mexican culture which I love. I enjoy rooftop lounges such as Highlight Room, Skybar or many others that provide a nice atmosphere and good music. There are many open mic lounges as well to hear some underground artist, poets and more. There are also some great Soul Food restaurants to check out in the city. Then again, there are so many restaurants I still have on my list to explore such as on the PCH Coast, along the beach-line which is a beautiful scenery. Whats better then having amazing food, in great whether while watching extraordinary views. Keep in mind LA is just one city in the whole California which has so many other beautiful places to visit.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When it comes to my motivation, drive, and hunger for success, there are several people who come to mind. The unsung heroes of my life, that never go unappreciated. First and foremost, my parents play a major factor in my reason to thrive for excellence. I seen my parents work extremely hard to provide the best life possible for my siblings and I growing up. They were born in Haiti, and moved to America without speaking the English language. Then to learn a language and adapt to a lifestyle they were not familiar of. They never gave up once so I ask myself “what is my excuse?” I too am also a father of a beautiful loving son, who since the day he was born, completely changed my perspective on life. The fact that this soul, this being, is dependent on me, make me do whatever it takes to provide the best life for him as my parents did for me. My son it truly a major part in my drive becuase I can’t fail him. I look into his eyes and see that he looks up to me. As my parents are hereos to me, I want to be a hero and inspriation for him as well. As they say, not all heroes wear a cape. I want to set the standards high in terms of success so he can embody the same motivation I have. I can’t expect my son to be anything that I’m not nor represent. So its only right I lead by example so that one day he can say my dad is my hero.
