We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaime Jay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaime, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The single most important decision I made other than deciding to work for myself is joining a mastermind. I feel you need to surround yourself with people that you look up to in order to become a better person. While my staff is like a family to me, there I some things I simply cannot confide in them with. It is important to have other people that are outside of the business that I trust to share thoughts, ideas and strategies with to get honest feedback. These are people that won’t sugar coat anything. Sometimes, they tell me what I did not want to hear and sometimes, that is exactly what I needed to hear. Not to mention some of the great friendships I have been able to make with people that would have most likely never crossed my path. I have working remotely since 2006. If there was another important decision that I made, it would be leaving corporate America and going out on my own. One of my good friends said, “Jaime, you were social distancing before social distancing was a thing”. It has been a tremendous blessing. I’m not a very good rule follower, lol.
What should our readers know about your business?
Our provocative point of view is to stop entrepreneurs and executives from spending their time on the wrong things so they can focus on doing their best work. Bottleneck Distant Assistants is a 100% remote-based company. Bottleneck identifies, cultivates, and hires Dedicated Distant Assistants (DDAs) from the Philippines. We appreciate the unique Filipino culture that is in line with our core beliefs and integrated into our own company culture. Our Distant Assistants also share the same love for supporting business growth worldwide. We source personal assistants remotely from the Philippines for business leaders who are looking to grow their business without the burden of the high costs associated running a brick and mortar. There is not a better feeling than to have one of our clients let us know how much they appreciate the service we provide because of the impact it has made in their business and more important, in their personal lives. We view the world through the lenses of a systematic approach to business growth. It ensures a higher success rate during the hiring process. There are three aspects of Bottleneck that makes us so different: 1. The Onboarding Process We built a three step process that we take each of our clients through that help them prepare to hire someone that will be in the best position to offer specific support to our clients. 2. 90-Day Implementation Plan Not only do we share the steps you need to take in order to hire better, but our team prepares a customized plan for each client for the first 90 days specific to your needs. At the end of 90 days, we provide a branded workflow manual that our clients keep. This not only helps confirms your personal assistant understands and knows how to perform the tasks you delegate to them, but this also increases the valuation of your company because your processes are now being documented. As you scale and you need to bring someone else on, they will not be wondering what it is you are expecting them to do… every single step is written down. 3. Integrated Services Program (ISP) The ISP is very unique to Bottleneck. Our clients are often looking for that ‘Golden Goose’. I define this as a person who our client thinks can do everything. In my experience, I have never found one person who is an expert in everything it takes to run a business. So, I came up with the idea to overcome this. When you hire a personal assistant through us, they will be trained to manage specific tasks for you. You build the trust and relationship over time so that you are able to delegate responsibilities to your assistant with confidence. The three areas your personal assistant can provide you with the expertise, over and beyond their existing role and responsibilities, are graphic design, website management and audio/video editing services. They simply delegate these tasks to an expert on my internal development team. Once the task is completed by my internal specialist, your personal assistant now become quality control. They make sure, because they understand you, that the tone, the voice and the brand integrity is maintained. Then, and only then, will they present the finished task to you for final approval. Now you do not have to go out and find these specialty services.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Although I don’t live in the city now, I did grow up just south of LA in Huntington Beach. One of the funnest places I enjoyed going was to the beach. I highly recommend checking out Huntington Beach, Venice Beach and the Santa Monica pier and beach. A trip to LA wouldn’t be complete without making the 22-mile drive down Sunset Boulevard from Hollywood to Malibu. There is so much history there and I can remember having a blast doing this several times. I would encourage you to check out the Chateau Marmont hotel and watch for movie stars as they frequent this hotel. Stop by the bar and have the bartender share some of the stories about the history of the hotel… pretty cool. One thing I never forget to do when I make the trip out west is to stop an In-N-Out. I absolutely love this place. Seems like there is a never ending line at most locations throughout the day, but it is definitely worth it. You can order off the menu. If you are feeling really aggressive, you can go full Monty and order a 4×4 animal style. This means, you will get a burger with four patties with the special sauce. It is amazing.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There is absolutely no way in the world I would be where I am at without the love and support of my wife, business partner, lift partner and best friend, Sara. She is my rock. She has been there for me during the most difficult times and she has enjoyed the experiences we’ve had that we both will never forget. I love her with all my heart. From a business perspective, there are two people that have completely affected the way I have built my business and those two people are Christopher Lochhead and Scott Beebe. These two individuals probably don’t even know one another, but what I have learned from those two people together, have helped me create the business I have today. Christopher Lochhead is an author, podcaster and 3-time Silicon Valley CMO. His book, Play Bigger, has completely changed the way I view my business. Christopher is the ‘Godfather of Category Design’. “Its counter-intuitive for most marketers, innovators and CEOs. We think what we’re doing in marketing, is marketing a product with features and maybe, benefits. When in reality, category creators and designers market the POV, because once people subscribe to your way of looking at things, they are going to be interested in what you have to market.” Scott Beebe is an author and CEO of a company that help relieves the chaos in business. He shares ideas and strategies that have helped me understand the importance of systems, processes and workflows. So much so, that I have built a large part of my business around this. Not only do I create the systems, processes and workflows internally, but I share how to do this with my clients. One of my favorite quotes I have learned from Scott is, “Do something as if it is the last time you are going to do it”. What this means is to document everything you are doing so that you can delegate this task to someone else with confidence when the time is right.
