We had the good fortune of connecting with James Lambert and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi James, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Ever since I took my first dance class, I knew that this is what I wanted to do! From that moment it immideatly pulled me in. The feeling that dance constantly provides is totally unique and can’t be quantified. I remember learning my first routine, and it feeling like I was playing a game of chess, or a game of cards – it’s a constant game of figuring out and exploration. How can I make this move feel good on my body? How can I push my body to make it look better? How quickly can I remember this routine and perform it back? This feeling of play and searching is something I look forward to every day.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey to getting to where I am today was not easy at all, but it has been so fun. Dance takes real hard work and determination, long hours, sweat and is really physical, but I learnt early on that enjoying those things will enable the hard work to feel cathartic and joyful. I moved to London at 18, and every day I would be training, choreographing, going to class, learning off of videos, in order to improve who I am as an artist. At times it felt like the goals were so far out of reach, but perseverance got me closer to success. It allowed me to work with music artists like Katy Perry, Bad Bunny, Kylie Minogue, Bebe Rexha and Rita Ora. I love that now dance allows me to travel the world, exploring different countries and cultures whilst doing what I love.

A recent performance I am most proud of is for the Joy Awards in Saudi Arabia. The award show allowed me to perform alongside multiple artists throughout the night; Katy Perry, Robbie Williams, Il Divo and Liz Mitchell. What was so special is that I was also part of the choreography team for this project too, so not only did I dance in the performances, but I got to help creatively with choreography for the show! I have also been involved in choreography teams that have worked with artists like Post Malone, Ashnikko, Fergie and Duckwrth. Choreography has allowed me to explore how dance feels on my own body and how I love to move, and I am teaching a lot more and loving that side of dance. Expressing myself through my own movement has been pivotal in the relationship between myself and my artistry.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It would definitely start with a walk along melrose, with the first stop being Be Bright Coffee, and if it’s a Sunday – Melrose Trading Post for a little bit of shopping.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my family. I am writing this whilst on holiday with them, and honestly my family is where I find the most comfort, solace and love. They are the reason that dance is my life, always supporting me in my journey and being there for me every step of the way. They have always encouraged me to express my most authentic self at all times, and have kept me on the right track. Not only are they the most warm, hilarious people, their love for each other is never ending.
