We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Ortiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jason, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Tree of Photography was just a vessel in which my vision and perspective on life could be presented in a still image.

I actually began taking pictures to provide background images for the poetry I would write back in my college days. After realizing that I had another passion which is photography, I began offering my services to my friends and collegues. I began with taking profesional headshots and graduation pictures to friends, charging them only food in return, chick-fil-a to be specific.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is deeply rooted in my personal journey and experiences, which makes it truly unique. As the oldest sibling, I’ve always felt a sense of responsibility to lead by example and embrace growth. This mindset is reflected in my work with Tree of Photography, where I approach every project with a desire to learn and evolve.

What sets me apart is my commitment to aligning my vision with that of my clients. Initially, I was shy about engaging personally with clients, but I’ve grown into a collaborative approach that fosters deeper connections and a more authentic representation of their stories. Tree of Photography isn’t just a brand or studio; it’s an extension of my identity, shaped by my Latino heritage and my roots in Anaheim. This perspective allows me to infuse my work with a unique touch that reflects my background and personal experiences.

I’m incredibly proud of how Tree of Photography has evolved, driven by grit and determination. Documenting people’s unique experiences and capturing their stories has been incredibly fulfilling. The journey hasn’t been easy—there were challenges along the way, from overcoming initial shyness to finding my voice and establishing my brand. But each obstacle taught me valuable lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of staying true to my vision.

The world should know that Tree of Photography is more than just a business; it’s a reflection of my passion for storytelling and my commitment to delivering meaningful and personalized work. My brand is a testament to the power of growth, collaboration, and the ability to turn challenges into opportunities.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting the area, here’s how I’d make sure they had an amazing week:

Day 1: Santa Ana Vibes

Evening: Start the adventure with a Friday night stroll down Fourth Street in Santa Ana. The lively atmosphere, vibrant murals, and eclectic shops make for a perfect evening. Grab a Paloma at Native Son Aleworks and soak in the local culture. For another fantastic cocktail, head over to Mission Bar.
Day 2: Anaheim Excursions

Morning: Brunch at The Packing House in Anaheim, where we can enjoy a variety of food options and explore the lively marketplace.
Afternoon: I prefer a more relaxed pace, a visit to Downtown Disney is also a great option.
Day 3: Placentia and Local Favorites

Morning: Head to Placentia, where we can visit the quaint downtown area and enjoy a leisurely breakfast at a local café.
Afternoon: Stop by Frosty’s Ice Cream for a sweet treat and a dose of nostalgia. It’s a legendary spot with fantastic ice cream flavors.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, a huge thank you to my incredible mom for always believing in me and being my rock. Your unwavering support and encouragement have been everything.

Next, to my brother Jorge and my sister Paola who has supported me in the late night editing times, where I did not let them sleep due to me blasting music while I worked.

To my supportive partner, Kathy, who is an amazing asset to the Tree of Photography team, I love how you inspire me to keep going and working hard. I love you!

And to my awesome colleagues:

Kevin Hobby: Collaborating on the County Project has been a blast, and your teamwork has been invaluable!
Luis Cachua: Your dedication to providing growth opportunities has made such a difference in my development.
The US Against the World Podcast: Thanks for giving me a platform to share my voice and insights along side a good friend Irvin Mendoza.
Tree of Photography Team: Working with all of you has been a highlight, and your creative energy continues to inspire me.
Thank you all for your incredible support and for being such an essential part of my journey!
