We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeff Goodman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeff, what inspires you?
Honestly? Children. If you’ve ever heard a child shout with excitement at the sight of a fire truck or seen a child focused on putting two puzzles pieces together, you know what I’m talking about. Even before entering the wild world of parenting, I got a sense of how intelligent and insightful kids are through a variety of camp counselor positions and volunteer opportunities. In many ways, they lead by example with their emotional honesty, curiosity, and creativity. When I became a father, I felt lucky to have the chance to see these qualities up close. Indeed, parenthood had a huge impact on my decision to become a children’s book author, and my children continue to give me inspiration without even knowing it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My foray into the children’s book world might sound natural in that it combines my background in writing with my experience in school settings and youth-focused organizations, but creating FEEL LIKE EGGS? was an eye-opening challenge. When I started on my book, I had no idea how much work would be required: research to ensure the idea was unique, revisions to make the rhymes as clear and accessible as possible, brainstorming on how best to illustrate the words, and all of the written materials associated with the book — not to mention the efforts involved in sharing the book with the public! Making the project even more difficult was the fact that it was done in the evenings after my day-job and parenting duties were complete. Still, the joy I experienced while working on the book reminded me that it was a project worth pursuing.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Los Angeles has so many fascinating nooks and crannies — and so much more to it than the average tourist will see. It’s such an incredible city! One day, we’d go to the beach and watch basketball at the courts in Venice. Another day, we’d get burgers at Apple Pan in West LA after hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains. Maybe we’d check out Grand Central Market in Downtown LA and the breweries in the Arts District, but we’d be sure to save room in our stomachs for tacos at Guisados in Boyle Heights. We’d explore West Adams, tour the Watts Towers, and find some Korean BBQ. But they couldn’t leave until they sample the cookies at Diddy Riese in Westwood.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This shoutout goes to everyone who was involved in the making of my debut children’s book, FEEL LIKE EGGS?: my wife, for supporting my dream; my publishing consultant, Susan Shankin of Precocity Press, for making the project possible; the illustrator, Gabriella Urbina, for bringing the words to life; and my family, who provided feedback and encouragement throughout the process. And, of course, I’m grateful to everyone who has read, recommended, gifted, and posted about the book!
