We had the good fortune of connecting with Jerilynn Stephens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jerilynn, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Happiness. If I am happy doing what I love, then I am successful. Throughout my life, I have tried different avenues in the beauty industry and outside it. I always come back to making people feel comfortable and beautiful for the camera. I have been in the film industry for 18 years.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
All my creative, fun shows keep me busy. I am most proud of this year 2 Emmy Nominations for The Voice, and a show for HBO Max called Legendary. I took over Season 2 of Legendary. I feel most honored by this nomination for the work my team and I did. It was by far the most difficult, creative show of our lives. I treat every episode of my shows like they are an Emmy Nomination episode. I guess that is why I currently have ten nominations. The Voice has been so good to me for ten years. Was it easy to get here? Heck no! I knew since beauty school, in Seattle when I first visited a film set, this is my dream! I moved to LA and did everything I could to meet and manifest my dreams. I told everyone I was a hair and makeup artist for film and shoots until I met someone who changed my life and hired me. I work hard and always educating myself on new styles, trends, extensions, and techniques. I never will be that old-timer that isn’t on trend with the times. There are just too many ways these days to keep up. I love what I do so much! It never feels like work. I’m a Hollywood Hairstylist and I’m an extreme optimist! Almost probably annoying to some people. My mission is to encourage people to follow their dreams. I wrote a book called, “The Five ‘F” Words To Manifesting Your Life.” The F’s being Figure, Focus, Fearless Action, Feel, and Faith. I will say these 5 F’s saved my life recently. I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in April at stage 1 A. By having a spiritual connection and using my “faith” and “feel it,” I discovered cancer early. I hope to spread awareness for Ovarian and Breast Cancer in this next chapter of my life. My treatments are done and my scans came back clear of all cancer! Now I celebrate!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had friends come to town and they’ve never been here, I would have to get them tickets to The Voice of course! We would have to hit some of my favorite beaches like Zuma & Hollywood Beach in Oxnard. Another day would be The Channel Islands Kayaking. WOW! It’s crystal blue out there and amazing caves! I would suggest getting a tour guide there and the ferry is fun too.
My favorite restaurant is Mastro’s Beach Club. Our family loves going there for special occasions and if my bestie was coming we would for sure go there!’
The Emmy Museum will be amazing when that opens.
My family is huge Dodger fans so if there was a game we would go! Go Dodgers!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people along the way that deserve a shoutout from me. These four ladies were at the start of my career. Gillian Whitlock, Mary Klimek, Lesley Poling, Darcy Gilmore.
My friend, Dean Banowetz, encouraging me to speak to cosmetology students about my journey in becoming Dept Head Hairstylist of top-rated shows with 10 Emmy Nominations and Guild Award Winner.
Suzanne Mulroy, my writing coach for my book, “The Five “F” Words To Manifesting Your Life.”
