We had the good fortune of connecting with Jerlicia Hobson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jerlicia, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Some habits that helped me succeed were definitely to follow my own voice and allow myself time to indulge in self care. Often times were caught up in what everyone thinks, does or says, so for me, I had to find ways to deal with people and things thrown my way by finding my own voice on what I believed and wanted for MY business. It became healthy to create the narrative I wanted for what I considered successful. The best habit I developed came from me knowing that I need to make sure I’m good before I can be good for anyone else. Self care is definitely key.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Initially, my plan was to major in Healthcare Administration at Jackson State University. However, unbeknownst to me, there was another purposeful plan for my life. When I was younger, my aunt was in esthetics. This introduced me to the world of beauty and makeup which I found intriguing. During the time while in school, I often found myself on YouTube, watching and learning about makeup. At that point I knew I wanted to do more than watch makeup on YouTube.
Fast forward a few years, I worked at Sephora and Mac Cosmetics. At the time, I felt this was the greatest thing ever.
Since I was only a freelance artist, my hours were very slim and let me just be real, I had bill bills especially when it came to raising my daughter. Although I had a lot of great gigs like working on a tv show, fashion shows, etc., I started a 9-5 job working at a financial consulting firm. That was short lived because I was truly limiting myself from great opportunities that involved what I was passionate about—makeup. I took the knowledge from working at the financial consulting firm along with the customer service skills from MAC and took a huge leap of faith by quitting my job to become a full-time makeup artist.
At the time, I literally said “God I’m going to trust you and I know you have so much in store for me but I’m scared”. 45 days after I quit, I went on a 13 state tour including 3 countries with a well-known recording artist.
That was nothing but God! I knew it was time to fully trust His plan for me and when I did, door after door opened. Having the ability to transform a woman’s life through makeup was the greatest gift God blessed me with. Some star list clients I’ve worked with are Kimberly Elise, Sarah Jakes Roberts, Tammy Rivera, Tink, Bmore Brave, KMichelle, Ari (TheRealKyleSister), Black Ink Crew Chicago, Dreezy, Le’Andria Johnson, Miss Ghana Universe, DJ Sophia Body, Mieka Joi, & Monique Rodriguez. I went from working at various retail stores, a corporate America job to being a full-time Professional makeup artist owning Makeup By Jerlicia LLC. Currently, I am the key makeup artist for the number 1 Black hair care brand in the world and a Grammy nominated recording artist. I’m also contracted with Teknique Agency.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned was to allow people to say what they want but to always trust and believe in myself. There are several people that will doubt you and even down play your gifts, including family and some friends. What’s for you, no man can take from you. Period.
The plan for me was always bigger and greater than the fear I had or of what people said about me.
Taking that leap and being successful was not a smooth walk in the park, but more like a crawl, a one leg hop, a jog, and a standstill for several years. Your journey is beautiful regardless of what it “looked like” or “took to get there” because it’s YOUR journey, and I promise it will inspire someone.
There are 3 things that makes me most proud. First, I am proud of the mother I have become. My daughter gets to bear witness the beautiful side of following what’s in your heart/dreams and trusting Gods plan for your life. Secondly, I am proud of the my evolvement a mentor. I never knew mentorship was a part of my purpose until I felt the joy of sharing my story and helping other women of all ages—no matter where they are in their journey. Last, but not least, I am proud of being self-taught and becoming an accredited professional makeup artist, which has allowed me to exceed my own expectations of true artistry.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Chicago is definitely the place to visit during the summer! We’re known for our food so if you’ve never been to Chicago, you have to hit up a Harolds! Go ahead and cry west side but you know Southside is the best side. We would definitely hit up downtown for a cute rooftop and Navy Pier for a night cap. I’m not into the club scene anymore but a brunch or day party? Count me in. Some of my favorite spots are the rooftop at LondonHouse, Hampton Social, and lastly Fremont or 80Proof, especially on Sundays for brunch. Going for a divvy bike ride along the lakefront is like no other. The scenery of the buildings, Buckingham fountain and the lake front is breathtaking. But I can’t leave off there, the gang gotta go to Wrigleyville. You’ll find interesting people, bars, restaurants and crazy things to get into without judgement.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely want to shout out my extremely supportive IG family and Cedrinna! About 7 years ago, I entered a beauty competition held by Cedrinna and my followers encouraged me to sign up. I had only been doing makeup for some months on others and did not feel like I was totally ready for something like that. Out of the makeup artists that were skilled in the profession, I was 1st runner up. I’ll never forget that day! The support I’ve received from my IG family is incredibly dope! It’s truly about community when you’re in the entrepreneurial beauty world. The connections and authentic relationships I’ve built from several people ALL over I can say is one of the greatest utilizations of social media.
