We had the good fortune of connecting with Jimena Soto Mejia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jimena, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Mexico City and I believe that is one of the most important characteristics about myself. Growing up in the capital of the country has its advantages starting with the fact that I got to live a thousand different lives in all the spaces that the city holds. Every street, every locality, every single corner was special in its own unique way. From the culture to its people. The warmth of the city became part of me. As I started pursuing my professional goals I realized that everything that inspired me and defined me as a designer came from the love I have for my culture, its representation and the city that shelters communities full of traditions, color and unity.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe my journey as a designer has had its ups and downs. When I first started fashion school I had a lot of doubts about me and specially about how good enough I was to start a creative career, which I believe is a common question among designers so it all came down to how much I wanted it and how much I was willing to work to achieve it. Undergrad was a huge journey for me since I followed a lot of different paths from photography to marketing and even graphic design. All these opportunities helped me build my brand as a designer and the way I want to portray my own vision of the world starting with my main source of inspiration: the human being and its representation. I believe my thesis was the one that allowed me to explore these topics while letting me find my own very unique language as a designer. I want the world to see my art and connect with it, I want it to be familiar and significant enough for it to be memorable.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I always have fun showing them around my school campus, college in my country is really different so it’s really a little adventure to walk around the building and show around the cool little spots. I think they all feel like they are in a movie, exactly how I felt the first time I walked around it. I also really enjoy taking them to the Getty, it’s a really. beautiful spot with an amazing view to the city.

For food I think my favorite spot Little Tokyo, it has amazing. restaurants and it really feels like a city within the city. They also have really fun Japanese toy stores that I always like to go check out.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom and Dad. They always believed in me and specially in my art. They didn’t just support me but also looked out for the person I wanted to become.
