We had the good fortune of connecting with Jodi Labowe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jodi, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My love of baking stems from my desire to create something sweet and beautiful for others to enjoy. In a world of uncertainty, the promise of a delicious handmade dessert helps to provide a small, simple sense of comfort and home.  I think the magic of baking is like a mindful romanticizing of the little things in life.  This is the heart and soul of my local, artisan baking business — She Baked Me.   My handcrafted baked goods celebrate the art of traditional homestyle baking, drawn from original heirloom recipes and always made from scratch with quality ingredients. I love being able to bring little morsels of sweetness for others to savor and share with family and friends. After all, its life’s tiny pleasures and sweet memories that matter most!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
She Baked Me is a small, artisanal baking business I started a couple years ago, specializing in original small batch baked goods. Every treat is created with a love for aesthetic craftsmanship, commitment to  quality ingredients, and a passion for original family recipes. She Baked Me offers a distinct array of luscious prepackaged desserts, including gluten free and vegan varieties. Some of my signature, most loved sweets are banana bread, cinnamon swirl coffee cake, mini lemon yogurt loaves, and crispy thin chocolate chip cookies sprinkled with Maldon salt. My baked goods have been at Echo Park Farmers Market, Muddy Paw Coffee in Silverlake, Highly Likely Cafe in West Adams, as well as Eightfold Coffee and Cosmic Vinyl in Echo Park. She Baked Me continues to grow through a tribe of loyal customers and supporters. I am so grateful and maybe a bit old-fashioned, but I love the intimacy of word of mouth along with working one on one with each client to personalize and customize every detail. Currently, She Baked Me also provides private baking services and catering for small private gatherings as well as holiday, corporate, and personal gifts. I believe as an artist and creator, you are constantly chasing perfection. It is a perpetual work in progress. The most important thing is to believe in yourself, follow your heart, and do what you love. I’m looking forward to some new, exciting & delicious things on the horizon for She Baked Me in 2021 – sit tight!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, we’d probably start by grabbing a coffee at Kafn, a sweet, hidden gem of a café by Adams Square. I love being outside so I’d probably take them on a nice hike around Griffith Park, or Temescal Canyon, which has stunning views of the ocean. Then we’d swing by a farmers market, depending on the day, for flowers, my fav Korean vegetable broth (Dave’s!) plus whatever’s fresh and beautiful. If there’s time its always lovely and relaxing to stroll around the Huntington Gardens. We’d probably end up at my parents home in the Sherman Oaks hills to cook dinner, hang by the pool and enjoy the breathtaking views of the L.A. valley! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I inherited a love of baking through my mom and grandmothers, learning alongside them in the kitchen as a child. (& still do!) I draw inspiration for all my desserts from heirloom recipes bound in a vintage cookbook my grandmother passed down to my mom and now to me. My family’s boundless love and support encourages me to continue creating in the kitchen and growing She Baked Me ~ it makes what I do all the more special and delicious ❤︎
