We had the good fortune of connecting with Joel Wetterstein and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joel, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
I got my favorite quote/affirmation from P90X. Tony Horton always told me to “Do your best and forget the rest,” and I’ve been doing that ever since.

I make stuff. I’ve produced films, I create content for businesses, I write scripts, I edit, I act… You might call me a “Jack of all trades, master of none,” but as I was recently reminded, that’s “oftentimes better than master of one.” —Shakespeare?

My biggest problem is that I love too many of the jobs it takes to make a film. And at the end of the day, I live by one simple truth:

“I care desperately about what I do. Do I know what product I’m selling? No. Do I know what I’m doing today? No. But I’m here, and I’m gonna give it my best shot.” —Hansel

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe that life is art. This ARTicle is art. Film is a metaphor for life—it’s not life, and yet it is at the same time. A film is a rich art cluster, a fusion of multiple art forms, where every piece contributes to the story.

I started as an actor, knowing almost nothing about what it actually takes to make a film. That changed when a friend decided to shoot a comedy sketch on a whim, and to my surprise, it turned out… alright. I was there. All they had was a tiny camera and a guy holding a microphone, and I thought: I could do this.

And I have. I’m still on this journey, pushing the limits of what I know, learning by attempting—by doing—and seeing where it takes me. It hasn’t always been easy, but that’s the beauty of it. Every challenge, every mistake, every ridiculous last-minute fix is part of the art.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If you’re a food lover, LA is definitely a great place to be. Everyone who comes into town must go to Salsa and Beer. I don’t know what they’re doing to the food there, but it’s so good, it can’t be legal. Can’t forget about sushi, Tatsuki’s been around since 1988 and the vibes are always good there, plus the manager’s not afraid to don a shark costume and blast it out on social media. If you wanna go hang out where everyone is cooler than you, head on down to Silver Lake and just walk around. A week probably isn’t enough time. LA is like an ogre, it has layers.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without my wife and the 4East Oncology team, I wouldn’t be alive today. So, shoutout to them for staving off the fires of Hell for at least a few more years.

But in all seriousness, I’m incredibly grateful to still be here. Surviving cancer wasn’t just a wake-up call—it was the kick in the ass I needed to finally write and produce my first feature film. So be on the lookout, because I don’t plan on wasting the time I’ve been given.
