We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Yasgoor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jordan, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
As a regular cannabis user, I was alway disheartened by the negative stigma attached to cannabis use. Even when progress was made in the field of medical marijuana, and cannabis was being used more and more to treat pain, insomnia, anxiety, and a variety of other medical conditions, the recreational use of cannabis remained taboo. I started my business to help break down the negative connotations surrounding cannabis in order to inspire a healthy, elevated image. Look at how alcohol is marketed and sold to the consumer – drinking is sociable, romantic, elegant, and adventurous. Huge movie stars have their own alcohol brands and film and TV glorify alcohol as high-class. Now compare that to marijuana – you see stoners, losers, and “drug” use. It is constantly equated to a less intelligent, less motivated group of people. But that stigma is NOT true. There are entire communities forming around breaking the stigma. My business has made it our mission to break this cycle, and celebrate cannabis use individually and socially.

Our pieces are intended to be on display in your home rather than being closeted. Our intention is that each piece allows you to feel confident in your cannabis practices and by displaying your new Bud and Rose Shop piece, you get the 2-for-1 deal because each piece is dual-functioning – a piece of art for your home and a smoking accessory. Our goal is to boast an elevated aesthetic without sacrificing function.

Work life balance: how has it changed over time? How do you think about the balance?

Often, work takes precedence over everything else in our lives. Our desire to succeed professionally can push us to set aside our own well-being. It’s my feeling that creating a harmonious work-life balance is critical to improving not only our physical, emotional and mental well-being, but it’s also important for our career.

Starting a small business isn’t easy, especially while maintaining a full time job as a producer. It doesn’t stop, it’s 24/7 and I chose this for myself. I’m the content creator, the marketing manager, the HR rep, the customer service portal, and so on and so forth. It wasn’t easy figuring out the balance of my full time job with my new small business, and also balancing being a social human with a life outside of work. But that grind is what keeps me going, and I can safely say it isn’t for everyone. But at the end of the day, Bud and Rose Shop is my passion, something I get excited about working on and progressing forward. I hope it provides inspiration for others to slow down, take a puff, and enjoy the moment.

What are you inspired by?

I look for inspiration everywhere I go. When I’m sourcing new pieces, I’m always thinking about what can look good in anybody’s home. It shouldn’t matter if your home skews mid-century modern, industrial, nautical, bohemian, urban modern, shabby chic, etc. I’m inspired by creating Bud and Rose Shop pieces that can function as art and as a smoking accessory in anybody’s home.

Risk taking: how do you think about risk? What role has taking risks played your life/career?

Point blank, starting a small business is risk taking in itself. Especially when that small business is cannabis-related. I’ve had many people tell me that the idea and pieces of Bud and Rose Shop are incredible, but I’ve also heard the opposite which to me, is a risk in itself. Every time somebody new sees our pieces, there’s a risk involved that they may not align with the business model, the pieces, me as the owner…you name it. But then, I think of the reward and how our pieces really help shape somebody’s daily lifestyle and that is priceless.

What is the most important factor in the success of your business/brand?  Would have to be people understanding our mission, which is ending the stigma behind cannabis use. The more people start to feel comfortable recreationally using marijuana and feeling confident in displaying a smoking accessory in their home or gifting to a friend, the more success we will collectively have in ending the negative stigma.

Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?

Bud and Rose Shop is full of unique vintage pieces that we’ve curated & elevated to celebrate comfort & cannabis culture. Our pieces represent sustainability as we repurpose its original anatomy into a new vessel, a new piece of art. Each and every one of our pieces is a level up from the old and dirty smoking accessory you likely had before finding Bud and Rose Shop. We’re thrilled that you’re saying bye-bye to the old smoking stuff you’ve been hiding and saying ‘high’ to your one-of-a-kind smoking accessories that are meant to flourish within your home’s aesthetic. Each piece within Bud & Rose Shop has been carefully sourced and repurposed for cannabis functionality without losing its’ vibrant charm and aesthetic. Of course there are challenges with starting a small business in the cannabis industry – for starters, it’s a newer industry. Just breaking through the threshold of launching is an accomplishment in itself. Marketing to those who don’t know they need to elevate their smoking accessories has been no easy task. It’s about re-forming mentalities and accepting that your smoking accessories don’t have to be ugly and put away. It doesn’t help that social platforms ban the promotion of cannabis friendly content. But one of the biggest hurdles to my success was making the leap of faith to start my own business in my garage. It felt impossible. But with the support of my friends and family, I started small. Now, we have our own online store, an impressive online following, and a whole community that supports the growth of Bud and Rose Shop. There are too many lessons to count! I had to self-teach web design, business management, and the safe and effective manipulation of glass products to make our art. I am so grateful for every lesson I’ve learned along the way. I hope Bud and Rose Shop inspires others to follow their small business dreams and to be open and proud of their cannabis use.
