We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh Delson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Josh, what are you inspired by?
As a game developer I’m always inspired by the thought process behind producing content. Whether its films, games, music, food, etc, every creative has a different perspective to contribute in making something new. What makes one’s perspective even more inspiring is how their social identity and life experiences influence their creative decisions. That’s why I try to keep a diverse network of friends to always feel inspired.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My goal as a creative is to expand the possibilities of games by trying things no one has ever done yet. It could be an experiment of a game genre, controller idea, or even a new take on gaming in public. Some of my recent accomplishments include showing off a pants escape room and alternative controller video game at the Game Developers Conference (GDC). Being able to talk about my creative decisions for such fun projects in front of thousands of people was such a dream. I’ll be honest though, its definitely hectic making experimental games since it revolves around travelling to tons of events and showcasing like crazy. I learned that its totally ok skipping a few expos since the internet is another amazing way to promote one’s creative projects.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m actually born and raised from Chicago, but since moving to LA I learned about so many cool places to visit. I’m a big advocate for the 626 area when it comes to visiting LA. Yeah there’s the generic Santa Monica Pier and a Hollywood hike, but the 626 has so much good food, art, gardens, and boba! My favorite day trip experience is picking up a Famous Breakfast Burrito from Lucky Boys, eating it at the Arlington Garden, spending the day exploring nature/art at the Huntington Library, grabbing a Watermelon Oatmilk boba from Bopomofo, then spending the evening in Old Town Pasadena. Since moving here I’ve been doing a ton of fun day trip ideas similar to this all over SoCal. The possibilities of experiences in LA is endless which I’m super grateful for.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be who I am today without the amazing developers I worked with in college and the mentors who guided me after graduation. I studied game development in college after my high school made a video game course after me, but I always felt like my growth as a developer happened after college. Being able to have a fantastic network of support right out of college really helped me solidify myself in the game industry. They really taught me the best practices in making video games while letting me support them at various game events across the world.
