We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Josh, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Growing up in Los Angeles and in the entrainment industry, I have seen the good and the not-so-good. When I left Citrus College as a studio musician, I left that behind and began a journey as a video editor working in film and TV. I also co-founded a recording studio in Pasadena. When we were in the studio, we kept seeing the opportunities for musicians for placements but also heard the fear and skepticism of the music industry. We found ourselves mentoring a lot of young artists and bands. and educating on the music business and licensing world.
We then decided to open Atrium Music. We were founded on open communication, educating the artists, and created a fair music library and one that was sonically perfect.
Success for us has come from listening to the stories of artists getting their music placed on a TV show for the first time. Seeing an IG story of them screaming, running around their living room with their family, and posting about it has been awesome.
From signing their first publishing deal to getting placements for them on TV, for us, it’s not only been our job, but it has been a passion.
We love our artists and enjoy the daily interaction, dedication, and talent they all bring to Atrium. This is who we are. All of this continues to feed and help build our amazing company.

Alright, so let’s move on to what keeps you busy professionally?
I started playing music when I was six years old. I started on Piano and Saxophone and later learned flute and clarinet. I took private lessons and went to a special music academy in High school. In College, I specialized in training to be a studio musician. I toured, recorded on various albums and the whole bit. Through that process, I realized that I needed something more from the industry than being a session musician. I wanted to build teams and needed to be a part of something that challenged me more. I wanted to make movies. I worked every day and night and did everything I could to learn an industry that was more complex than I ever imagined. I found my way into assistant editing and becoming an editor on network shows and worked my way up to being a supervising editor. I have produced a film from start to finish and have been involved in many more projects since.
I have always desired to learn all aspects of everything. I remember being told to “pick a lane”. Not only music but about all things “production”. I wanted to learn and do it all. But I found my place in editing. I have a super-strong work ethic and it ALL plays into what I do now. My music background is so important to my editing, my ability to produce music, and talk to fellow artists about how to improve their music. This all comes from my journey. I can create a project from start to finish but most of all, I enjoy bringing amazing people together to create something that means more to everyone than they ever thought possible.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spot in all of Los Angeles is Old Town Pasadena. I love the vintage vibe, old buildings, lots of trees, and everything being so accessible and clean. The Huntington Library in San Marino is not too far away either and is another favorite spot for our family. I do have a little favorite coffee shop in Pasadena called Copa Vida. It’s just a short walk up the treelined street from our office.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing our successes and recognizing where we are at this moment in life.
So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I love learning about leadership and how to build a strong business founded in love and lifting people up. Some of my favorite books are “Love Works” by Joel Manby, everything by Malcolm Gladwell, and/or Bob Goff. I also enjoy many podcasts. Really digging Gary Vee, Andy Stanley, and Tim Ferriss. I also think the desire to learn, drives me to find something every day to better my leadership or company.
