Meet Joyce Ng: Los Angeles Photographer (2wnty4)

We had the good fortune of connecting with Joyce Ng and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joyce, why did you pursue a creative career?
As young as I can remember, I have always had a passion for the arts. Art was never an option as a career growing up in my family. I was expected to be anything but an artist because it “wouldn’t make money” and it was unstable. It was just a matter of figuring out how to pursue and execute it to create income from it. I knew I loved drawing, creating and anything art related. I was terrible at other school subjects. I felt in my soul I had to do something with it or else I wouldn’t be happy and it has been a long journey of discovering who I am and what I want from it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart from others is that I enjoy capturing photos showing people’s personalities or an important moment in time. I enjoy taking photos of everything around me and using the environment to fit someone’s vibe. However, I’ve always loved capturing moments in life that I would love to save in my mind. Especially if it’s a person’s smile or a special moment during that point in time. I try to capture those moments each time I shoot instead of just shooting a subject in front of a background. Each image should create an emotion or feeling.
I think life is a journey and even if you choose one path, it will eventually take you to different experiences and paths to gain knowledge whether it is a difficult or important lesson you need to learn. It was definitely not easy for me and as many artists do, they always have doubts about their art. Although I consider myself a photographer, I still just like creating as an artist. The most important thing in life is to enjoy life for what it is (pain or happiness), let go, and appreciate how far you’ve gone wherever it may take you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would probably take them to the SGV 626 for some bomb asian food. I’m a huge fan of sushi, ramen, and boba. I love FOOD in general. I would highly suggest the beautiful beaches in Malibu and Orange County because there are less people than the famous beaches. Melrose for the unique shops and clothes. There’s lots of cool museums in DTLA. Of course if covid wasn’t a thing, festivals and concerts are a must in L.A.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to all the amazing, supportive friends and family in my life. Everyone that has lifted me up during the hard times during my life when I had nothing or struggling trying to get to where I need to be. Special Thanks to my parents, my late grandmother, Bry O, Summer L, Mary Beth, Kris AR, Daniel O., Thomas P, Abis A, Georgio T, Angela L, Brian T, Brandi J, Anthony D, Luis A, Teamarrr, Naika, BK Habermehl, LaDonna, and more! You’ve all made such a huge impact in my life and I’m grateful for you all.
