We had the good fortune of connecting with Kamala Kirk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kamala, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The 5 elements that allow me to be successful are confidence, determination, passion, patience, and the ability to envision my future success. These traits allow me to persevere when facing long hours and the unexpected challenges of running a business. By maintaining a positive outlook and taking daily action towards my goals, I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Our digital publication, Spa & Beauty Today, provides detailed and comprehensive coverage of spas around the world, in addition to beauty, wellness and travel-related content. We’ve put together an extensive directory that features hundreds of spa profiles where we interview spa directors and owners who share information about their amenities, services, insider tips and more. We also enjoy being a platform for consumers to discover up-and-coming brands and spas.
Over the past decade Lizzy and I worked as beauty editors in the publishing industry, and our experiences led us to discover a gap in the marketplace for good quality consumer spa-focused content, which eventually led to the creation of our publication.
It has been an exciting, fun and challenging journey. It takes a lot of work and persistence to build a website and publication, create and publish good quality content on a regular basis, build relationships with brands and companies, as well as handle all of the other aspects of running a business, but we are passionate about the industry we work in and we enjoy discovering beautiful new spas and hotels, as well as learning about the latest innovations in wellness and testing new beauty products.
We founded our business in 2018 and have been working consistently on building and growing it for the past 3 years. It takes a lot of dedication and focus, and it’s important to have a long-term vision as well as set short-term goals for yourself along the way. It’s a lot harder work than you think it’s going to be and just know that the hard work you put in today will eventually pay off, but success doesn’t happen overnight. It’s also not just about reaching that big end goal–be sure to enjoy the journey along the way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
From beaches and hiking trails to a vibrant urban downtown area, Los Angeles has a wide variety of beautiful places to go and fun things to do. A few places I would recommend to anyone visiting include:
-Dinner at Nobu in Malibu
-Massages at The NOW
-Afternoon tea at The Langham, Huntington, Pasadena
-A stroll through the grounds at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens
-An evening of star watching at Griffith Observatory
-A sunset bike ride along the Strand in Manhattan Beach
-Lunch at the Fountain Coffee Room at the Beverly Hills Hotel, followed by a visit to their gift shop
-A hike at either Runyon Canyon or to the Hollywood Sign
-A quick getaway to Palm Springs for a night at The Parker
-Riding the glass slide at OUE Skyspace then dinner at La Boucherie in DTLA, which has amazing views of the city
-Brunch at The Ivy
-Vintage shopping on Melrose
-A scenic coastal drive along PCH Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
“The Secret” is my favorite motivational book that has helped teach me to manifest my goals through my thoughts.
I’m grateful for my Spa & Beauty Today co-founder Lizzy Sherman. She and I share the same passion and vision, and it’s been wonderful having her as a partner and support system during this exciting and challenging journey as entrepreneurs.
I’m also thankful for the amazing support from my husband Eric, who has believed in me from day one and has helped me on so many levels, both personally and professionally.
