Meet Kamari Brownlow | Entrepreneur & Executive

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kamari Brownlow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kamari, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always desired to have my own business. I always knew that desire would manifest itself. The only real question was, when? The pandemic provided both the answer and the opportunity. Like most of the world, when we went into lockdown, I was forced to sit still. Initially, I dreaded it, but then I realized I (finally) had time to be creative. I set an intention and every day, I filled pages and pages of my notebook with questions and answers about the brand I wanted to build. The more I wrote, the more I was inspired, and once I figured out my “why”, the “how” became clear. That’s how Amora Design Studio began.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I work as a Director of Medical Billing. In college, I took a summer job as a customer service rep. for a billing agency. It was then that I was introduced to a side of patient care that I never knew existed. I fell in love. The more I learned about the business, I grew even more passionate about patient advocacy in the billing process. Within my first six months on the job, I developed a program I knew would help the company improve the quality of their new hire training and employee retention. I requested a meeting with the executives and laid out the reasons why they needed the program and why I was the right person to head that program. I guess you can say the rest is history. I have been training employees how to advocate for patients ever since. The lessons I’ve learned along the way: 1) don’t be afraid to negotiate your salary (even if the company cannot meet your ideal wage, they may be willing to offer other benefits, e.g., additional time off, education reimbursement, a hybrid position, etc.) 2) The second lesson would be best described by one of my favorite (Maya Angelou) quotes – “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” In my line of work, it is rare that you get a letter or a phone call from someone who is excited to iron out medical bill; especially, in our healthcare system. In most cases, the caller/patient is stressed, scared, sad and sometimes all at once. Meeting them with respect, and compassion for what they may have been through is usually the first step to an amicable resolution.
With that said, when it comes to my brand, Amora Design Studio, I want you to be inspired to cultivate wellness through daily acts of self-care and to optimize the decor elements in your home/office to help improve your overall mood.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my BFF was visiting and I wanted to show her the best time ever, I would take her to brunch at a rooftop restaurant with IG worthy skylines and backdrops. Next, we’d do some shopping and make it home in time to watch a nostalgic movie over pizza and lemon drops made by yours truly. We’d end the night with a face mask moment. The next day we’d take in a group meditation, yoga class or (depending on the number of aforementioned lemon drops) maybe Runyon Canyon. We’d spend the rest of the day relaxing (because…Runyon!). Then, we would plan our outfits for a fancy dinner before the intimate concert featuring one of our favorite music artists. I’d also make sure we had a day to visit any one of the interactive art experiences the city has to offer. We live for art in every form and fashion. Ultimately, the week would be filled with memorable moments, a few pics and short videos, perfect backdrops, zero lines and always a comfortable place to sit.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my (five-year-old) daughter, my rainbow baby. Thank you for making me a mommy. Your existence reminds me of the power of manifestation.Your love reminds me of the power of healing. Because of you, I have the courage to be the best version of myself.
