We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Hauschka and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I started my business back in 2009, I was 100% focused on my business, building my brand, building my skill set, and learning the ins and outs of how to operate a business. As a new photographer, and not at all a business person, I worked long days and nights to establish myself. I took every job I could, and as I began to get busy, I was able to be a bit more picky with the work coming in and raise my prices every year to match my experience. The work paid off and after about 5 years in business I was doing very well for myself. It was also at about that time that I realized I would soon burn out and not be able to achieve so many other life goals of mine if I kept going at that rate and burning the candle at both ends. I chose to move from Washington DC to Los Angeles, CA and worked hard to create a work-life balance by shifting my subject focus from weddings and events to lifestyle and editorial work which would then allow me to enjoy more weekends and have more time for me and my life. The transition was a no brainer, though difficult at times in a new city to get the same amount of work I had had before, the decision has been life changing and has allowed me to create the life I want by giving me more space to have other meaningful adventures in life that are not solely career focused. I absolutely love what I do and I wouldn’t change it for the world. But it is still work, and with out acknowledging that there needs to be a boundary between work and living life, it is easy to lose sight of the things that are important to you and constantly lose yourself in work and clients. It’s not easy to keep the fine balance between work and live, but I’ve found that creating a good schedule and healthy habits that separate my work from every day living has been a game changer. It allows for me to fill up my proverbial cup, so that I can both be happy with myself, be the person I want to be for family and friends, and perform even better in my work space so I can give my clients what they need easily and effortlessly.

Growing up, I was always a lover of the light. I had my first camera at age 8 and have albums and albums of photographs from over the years. Photography was always something I admired but it wasn’t until after completing studies in Biology, Medicine, Music & Food that I decided to take on photography as a career. I started Kate Haus Photography in 2009 after a year of schooling at Boston University’s CDIA in Washington DC. In 2014 I moved my business to Los Angeles, transitioning from specializing in Wedding, Family and Event photography to Lifestyle, Portrait, Editorial and Commercial photography and haven’t looked back. I hope you enjoy what you see here on my site and that we get to work together in the near future! Be sure to check out my instagam page for some of my most recent work!
