We had the good fortune of connecting with Maestro Lightford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maestro, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Funny enough, my business started from an idea I got from my dad. He said, “you should become the person that gets the band together.” My very dumb response to him was “no one is going to pay me not to play”. Obviously, I was wrong. At the time I had no idea of the concept of a contractor. During those days I was starting to get a lot of calls to do events like weddings and company parties. It got to a point where I could not play one gig because I already had a gig. Thus, Lightworks Muzik was started!!!!! I felt this was a win-win situation for my clients and musician friends. My clients had no idea who the good and reliable musicians were in the area (Nashville, TN), but I DID!!!! I was able to keep the top-notch live gig musicians working. Now the company has grown into a full-on music production company where we not only offer musician contracting services, but we also provide musical services like producing music records, orchestral arrangements, and music for media (film, tv, games, etc.).
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Lightworks Muzik, our purpose is simple, “Transform Musical Dreams Into Reality”. I’m happy to say even though we’ve had some unordinary musical requests, we have been able to bring our client’s dreams to life. In my own personal life, I consider myself as a people pleaser. That character trait has been the driving force of my business. I love it when a client says, “This is exactly what I was hearing/seeing in my head”. I must say this has been extremely hard to consistently pull off, but I’ve found that the trick is to seek to develop more than just a surface level business relationship with the client. By obtaining a more meaningful relationship, this will allow you to really understand the needs of the client without them having to explain everything.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To be honest, I have not explored all that LA has to offer. So, this is a hard question for me to answer. When my family/friends come to town to visit me, it involves these things: Randy’s Donuts, Ryen Café, Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles, and seeing the Hollywood Sign. Yeah, I’m pretty boring. For me and my close family/friends, the best moments are the ones where we are all in one room talking loudly all at the same time. If you want us to stop talking, then just say “dinners ready”. LOL!!!!!!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest supporters are my parents, Melvin and Carolyn Lightford. They have been there through it all. The highs. The lows. EVERYTHING!!!!!! Also, I must give a shoutout to my wife, Marjorie Lightford. She has been a good source of encouragement. I call her my greatest inspiration and greatest distraction. LOL!!!!
