We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Renner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, why did you pursue a creative career?
I believe creativity has been apart of my being all of my life. As an Aquarius Sun and Cancer Rising, I inherently lean towards my creative side by using my hands and heart. As a young child I was the only girl of 3 boys, so outside of playing soccer, I spent a lot of my time playing in my room with my imaginary friends (really just my stuffed animals). We had tea parties, painted nature scenes and made potions, so creativity runs in my blood! It’s funny looking back now as it makes sense in my Holistic Esthetics practice and Evolutionary Herbalism career. My biggest passion is to create unique remedies for my clients, and customize treatment plans specifically for the individual. I believe we are all so unique and our healing journeys are special and deserve to be looked at through an outward lense. While I love the aspect of my childhood teaching me so much about who I am today, I do believe the beauty of art and expression chose me. I find value and dedication to my work by continuing my education and growing my practice. When I’m feeling stagnant and lacking creative flow, I turn to nature. Mother Earth always provides a fresh perspective and provides so many teachings from the plants, birds, flowers and the bugs. Connecting back to Earth helps me keep my spark of inspiration alive and ever flowing.I think that’s the magic to pursuing an artistic career!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a licensed Holistic Esthetician, an Evolutionary Herbalist, and Certified Yoga Teacher. I am a healer and grateful student of the Earth. I perform healing facials and therapeutic massage on clients while incorporating the use of herbs and plants in my treatments and after-care protocols. I have been working in the skincare industry for 9 years and I’m so lucky to have found my passions starting at a young age. I struggled with various types of hormonal acne since I was about 11 years old and i was always looking for new DIY tips and tricks to “fix” my acne. I tried everything out there and nothing worked. I saw professionals, I took medication and all the topical treatments, and I even went as far as Accutane, which I consider a highly toxic medication to “cure acne. And none of it got to the root cause.
It wasn’t until my early 20’s that I realized it was an internal imbalance of my digestion and hormones, and that is when my perspective of skin health really shifted. It was not a quick shift or an easy one because holistically healing acne is not an easy journey, or a one-size fits all type of program. I spent years crying, wearing heavy make up to cover my blemishes and truly felt disconnected to what was causing my acne to never fully go away.
It wasn’t until I really dove into my studies and education that I learned that Acne is simply a messenger and form of communication from my body that something was calling for help. This mindset gave me an entirely fresh perspective on ALL symptoms that arise on the skin because our skin is an organ, in fact it’s the largest organ! Our skin is a reflection for what is going on in our internal environment. Realizing this opened me up to a world of Digestive health issues.
This brings me to an important part of my work because of this direct correlation between our Gut micro biome and our Skin. So as a holistic Skin Therapist as I like to call myself, my practice is not just focused on healing skin wounds and decongestant pores, I look at the entire being, physically, energetically, and even emotionally. We are complex beings and deserve to be looked at as a whole.
My clients love my unique style of facials because I genuinely care about helping them come back to a harmonious balance while also feeling nurtured and cared for. I primarily work with women who struggle with Acne/Congestion, scarring, rosacea, eczema, and lymph stagnation. I focus each session on what their specific current needs are, their long term goals, and we come up with a plan together. My facial treatments consist of deep cleansing, enzymatic fruit peels, face massage for lymphatic drainage, muscle toning, or tension release, extractions, customized face mask and neck and shoulder massage. Some of my favorite modalities to use are Gua Sha, Facial Cupping, Red Light Therapy, and Diamond Glow (microdermabrasion/hydra facial). These tools are such a fun method to uplift a facial without getting too invasive!
As an herbalist I love to work with herbs in my treatments and hand make many of my products that I use on my clients like Face oils, Body Oils, Honey Masks, and Aura Sprays. All of my skincare products are non-toxic, organic, mostly wild-crafted or small batch made, and of course their proven to work effectively on the skin. I love a mixture of science and holistic, while keeping the integrity of the products and plant spirits.
Another part of my work as an herbalist and healer is that I recommend herbal remedies to support my client’s body during their healing. Each remedy is specific for each person and consists of various types of remedies from tinctures, to teas, to oils, and incorporating foods into their diet. I’m not a doctor, so I always encourage my clients to check in with their physician as well.
I truly Love what I do. I’m honored to be given the gift of touch, and to use it in a way that has helped so many women find a harmonious balance in their skin/Gut health. I had a client once tell me, it felt like it was a re-remembering for her, like she was coming home. I will never forget those words and believe that is what my biggest intention is for my practice.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Let’s pretend that there aren’t any closures or restrictions when my best friend comes to visit 🙂 We would start the weekend with a pampered girls night of self care at Wi spa getting massages, body wraps, hot tubs and sauna and steaming. Then end our evening at Cafe Gratitude for a cozy dinner with great food and lovely atmosphere. The next morning I’d take her to my favorite secret hike in Topanga to get in touch with the nature parts of LA, with an incredible view of the city/ocean. Then we would spend some time at the beach and head over to Inn of the Seventh Ray for a luxurious lunch! After we would possibly do a bit of shopping around Santa Monica and hit the farmer’s market of course! After buying too much food and goodies, we would get all dolled up to see live music because our favorite band BrassTracks was playing! We aren’t much partiers anymore so we get home at a decent time and sleep in and the next morning we attend a lovely Yoga Class at Laughing Frog Yoga and a sound bath afterwards. Since we got our creative juices flowing we decide to take our first pottery class at Full Circle Pottery!
After, we go to a friend’s house for a BBQ to laugh and create memories. I’d take her to Hotel Erwin rooftop bar to watch the sunset and we’d make our way back to Hollywood because hypothetically traffic doesn’t exist in LA, and we would have a lovely dinner at Gracias Madre’s. I think that would be an ideal type of weekend for me and my best girl friend 🙂

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate a shoutout to my 11 year old sister Isabella Vieira. She and I have a very large age gap between us, more than average siblings do, but nonetheless, she is the most important person in my life. She saved my life when she was born. I was going through a very rough patch in high school and I felt extremely misunderstood and confused. When she was born, everything changed. Our connection grew very deeply as I spent all of my free time with her when she was a baby. I loved to bathe her, feed her applesauce, change her diapers and I’d even steal her from her crib at night for extra cuddles. She was the light on my darkest days. Watching her grow up is the most miraculous experience, even from the first day she could talk, she has always had so much to say! She is curious, compassionate, sassy, empowered, intelligent, and the biggest jokester of all! She really knows how to light up a room. Over quarantine we lived together again, and I’m so grateful for the quiet time we shared, especially when she let me practice new massage moves on her. Even if they tickled, she never said no.
Most of all, she has always been my biggest supporter. Along with my two amazing parents Kym and John, Bella has always cheered me on in my efforts to heal my wounds, and transmute them into my passions. Her attention to detail about everyone around her comes from a place of unconditional Love and it’s so pure and genuine. She is my biggest inspiration.
Bella reminds me of my powerful feminine energy and I hope I can be a reflection of that for her. I love to watch her grow and I’m excited to see how her big Leo energy transforms when she becomes an adult.
Big Love!
