We had the good fortune of connecting with Keona Crenshaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keona, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursue the creative career because nothing else makes me happier. Like, I truly feel alive every chance I get to hold a mic and sing for people and for the Kingdom. One of the main reasons I choose to pursue it is because I’m reminded of “The parable of the Talents”. While God is gifting us, it’s only right to sow by using what we have, gifting it to the world, you never know who you might come in contact with while pursuing. In pursuing, you meet people and connect, you network, and you build relationships. This may be cliche, but I was truly born to do this. I’ve tried other things, such as being a behavior therapist, but it’s just not for me… while it may be great for whoever decides to pursue it, being an artist is the best thing I could have ever done. It’s truly a joyful thrill. Like, it truly makes me happy when people say my voice touched their hearts. I want to touch the hearts of people with what The Creator created me to do, that’s why I pursue the creative career.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Singing is my passion. What sets me apart from others, I’d say is my personal view of music, myself, and how I deliver it. I believe creating experiences for your fans is a must, and every time I’ve performed, that’s what I’ve done. On my journey, the thing that has me here is my focus, every day, I strived to elevate from where I was, the moment I became comfortable, I knew new levels were on the way and they weren’t going to be easy. Prayer got me through..some days, I just wanted to quit, but endurance kicked in. Lessons I’ve learned is have more details in your plan, people will fail you, but don’t stay in that sadness, the dream is free, the currency is patience. I want to the world to know I’ve arrived and have music to be released this year. Stay Tuned!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take them to Hollywood, it’s where the tourists go, so they can see the stars. When you’re walking down Hollywood and you see those stars, you definitely get inspired. I’d take them to the beach, I always feel like the beach helps you to reset and release… Then, we’re cruising down Melrose, doing some sight seeing. Wokcano has become one of my favorite restaurants, it’s very vibey, garlic noodles are amazing. Crave is an amazing restaurant as well. Then, we’re going to Target, it’s my favorite store (haha).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out my mom, who has pushed me from day 1. Her prayers have covered me. Her support has been more than great. Like she literally knows every up and down I’ve faced while on this journey. It hasn’t been easy, and when I’m feeling hopeless, she’s always reminding me of my STRENGTH and who it comes from. I bless God for my mother, RaQuel DuPree. She has proven to be my number 1 fan and I’m grateful to God for her. She pushes me and reminds when I’m ready to give up, that my breakthrough is right there (every time). Each time she says that, I literally have a breakthrough. I want to shout her out because she deserves it, she’s helped so much while on this journey. I want you to know your support doesn’t go unnoticed, I promise. I’m very grateful for my family, friends, and to even have fans and their support as well. I’d like to individually thank you all.
